General election is imminent. Wiill any parties be offering robust (custodial) sanction for criminal disregard of public records legislation. No democracy without accountability, and no accountability without evidence.
It was such an honour to share my thoughts at the ICA Congress Abu Dhabi 2023 — a week of thoughtful collaboration and exciting conversations. It’s especially fun spending time with this year’s new professionals!

A resonant piece, but with a gap between emotions & accountability. Without proof, justice is compromised. The injustice shouldn’t have happened. Records should have been kept. We can’t change the past. We CAN change the future. We must fight for evidence. https://t.co/UB3Dy0DCAj

@maddow I wrote a book in 2019 about the importance of protecting records in a digital age. I even warned about Trump’s actions then.
Please can we start focusing less on “archives = old” and more on “archives = accountability”? @charlie_savage@nytimes@USNatArchives#Amatteroffacts
Existing #records laws are weak, and the public perception of archivists as quiet, compliant civil servants (ref. @maddow and the “lop eared bunny”) leaves archival professionals struggling just to get people to recognize the critical links between evidence, facts, and truth. 2/
This piece by @charlie_savage is accurate but it doesn’t go far enough. Archivists don’t just store old documents for history. Archivists protect evidence to keep government officials accountable to the people. We can’t just hope presidents will comply. @nytimes@USNatArchives 1/
