San Bernardino County Fire’s Urban Search and Rescue Team Expands to Include New Agencies

Last week, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District’s Urban Search and Rescue team, California Regional Task Force 6 (CA-RTF-6), expanded its roster by welcoming members from three local fire agencies. The Chino Valley Independent Fire District, Ontario Fire Department and the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District have each contributed six USAR specialists to the current roster.

Regional USAR task forces were born out of necessity of our earthquake prone state. Regional teams are state managed resources half the size of their larger FEMA USAR counterparts and travel with a significantly smaller equipment cache. This makes them lighter, faster and capable of rapid deployment to an emerging incident. The goal of the regional team concept is to manage smaller incidents or bridge the gap between a large incident and the arrival of federal resources.

The addition of personnel from adjacent agencies improves the operational depth for the team by increasing the available resources in the west valley, the most populous section of San Bernardino County. These eighteen new members augment the existing team which will allow CA-RTF-6 to respond out of region while maintaining an additional roster should a separate incident occur within the county during a deployment.

Since its inception sixteen years ago, CA-RTF-6 has been hosted by San Bernardino County Fire and is one of thirteen task forces certified by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. With a jurisdiction encompassing more than 19,000 square miles, County Fire maintains three Heavy Rescue units: One in the West Valley (Fontana), one in the Mountain Division (Lake Arrowhead), and a third in the High Desert (Hesperia). The team is trained and equipped to locate victims in a variety of hostile environments then extricate those victims while also providing for their medical needs throughout the incident. USAR teams are commonly dispatched to mitigate structural damage/collapse, confined space rescues, trench rescues, technical rope responses as well as swiftwater and flooding incidents.

Notable assignments for CA-RTF-6 include the Camp Fire which decimated the town of Paradise, CA in 2018, the Montecito mudslides in 2018, the blizzard in the San Bernardino mountains in 2022 and Tropical Storm Hilary in 2023.
