@DrEricDing Some are descended from people kidnapped, enslaved and displaced, sometimes several times over. We should not be lumping all these experiences into one "we are all immigrants" to make the point that anti-immigrant rhetoric is harmful and racist.
@DrEricDing *SOME* of us are descendants--not of immigrants but of colonizers. Let's call it what it is. Coming here recently in search of a better life is (arguably) less morally loaded than coming to actively participate in native genocide.
@DrDaleNYC @sandibachom Bruh. Blackjack has some of the best odds in the house at 49%. The only thing with better odds is betting black/red at roulette.
@TrumpetDave@ShakeLS For the prefrontal cortex? Yeah the newer research is pushing that number back a bit isn't it? I usually say "until at least 25" but worried about characters!
@TrumpetDave@ShakeLS You left out the part where she was groomed to be a child bride, had two children before her brain was done developing (prefrontal cortex isn't done until 25) and then was effectively discarded. Her actions were about finding something for herself after ALL that being used.
@VorpalBi@christapeterso What elements strike you as depictions of poverty? The Weasleys? I never thought that this was meant to reflect true poverty, just what wealthier folks snobbishly thought of class difference. Are there others I'm not calling to mind? I never considered this angle.
@NativeApprops For reasons that are, I'm sure, different but certainly must have some resonances, the weight of the institution's systemic violence through exactly the kinds of banal mechanisms you described last spring (hiring and lines etc.) became simply unbearable and I felt complicit.
@NativeApprops I'm not Native, but am queer and disabled and am very much decolonization- and anti-racism-oriented in my work and pedagogy, and I can 100% understand that feeling of freedom. I was pre-tenure TT and the violence of the institution was soul-crushing.
@DrBlackDeer @JWhitehead204 It has almost become a sacred text to me. The wisdom, the guiding light, the glimmer of hope after all else is lost. It's so powerful. https://t.co/YPO0323v3P
@DrBlackDeer @JWhitehead204 Honestly, if I were still a college professor teaching literary theory & criticism I would teach Whitehead's intro. But also, the stories taught me something I can barely put into words about the power of visualizing the world we want to see rise from this dystopian present.
