THOUGHTS: Genuinely disappointed but not surprised by the recent comments about Stellar Blade Demo and its protagonist Eve being “a s** doll” who is made by “someone who has never seen a living woman”🚀
This talking point of “never seen a living woman” has been tossed around a lot in the industry to gaslight people into thinking there’s something wrong with them for appreciating a character that doesn’t fit one archetype of women often portrayed in western media.
I’m inclined to ask, have YOU seen an actual living woman? Have you seen recent music video? Have you looked at TikTok? Instagram? Real life gyms, parties or walked in any streets? Have you seen what actual real life women and men do to make themselves look pretty and attractive?
All these implants, veneers, Hollywood smiles, skin care products, make up, and this applies for both women and men. People have been doing wonders to make themselves look more appealing. And you know what? It’s ok. Nothing’s wrong with that. It doesn’t mean that they lack any meaning or value. It doesn’t mean looks are all they have to offer. It just means people care about their own image and looks.
So again, have YOU seen a real woman? What makes you the arbiter on what should a real woman look like? What makes the modern western view of what women should look like to be the unified object measure of self worth?
You may argue “but game characters aren’t real” and I say it’s irrelevant. When a singer does it, it’s “empowering” so why can’t a video game character be “empowering” in the same way? You may say “video game female characters are crafted for the male gaze” and what do you think superstars have been crafted for by their producers, directors and photographers?
Last time I checked, it’s wrong to judge people by their looks, especially women and deeming them to be “a s** doll” and refusing to see past their looks is a form of sl** shaming and is misogynistic.
So when will journalists confront their own misogyny? When will they hold themselves accountable for the way they sl** shame younger audiences into stripping themselves of their beauty just so they can “fit in” with their approved archetype?
I’m not pro or against traditionally beautiful characters. More often than not, I play as characters that I aspire to look like, be as strong as, enjoy their story and writing or value as an overall package. But it’s about time we stop gaslighting people into thinking there’s something wrong with them for liking one or the other, or that they “haven’t seen/touched a real person”, because the way I say it, those who make these comments seem to be the one who haven’t.

We’re—may I say—ass-backwards: we are living for the children with nothing to give them because we do not have a real enthusiasm for our own vocation, or profession, or whatever it is in life.
