John Thomas Nolf, a former tramp printer, drew this for Inland Printer 1911. He travelled from PA to MO to OR and finally settled in Grand Detour, IL. A visit to @artinstitutechi triggered a career change from #printer to painter. Known for painting people and places around town.
An example of #sexist#advertising prevalent at the time. Found on an electric washing machine ad. Washing was a woman’s job and having a washing machine was supposed to afford more free time to do other back-breaking work.

Purple is regarded as a #royal colour. Naturally created from the mucus of the Murex snail. It’s rarity attributed to needing at least 10,000 snails to produce only 1 g of #dye. Subjected to sumptuary law in Ancient Rome. Only the Emperor could wear the Tyrian #purple.

#Woodcut prints like this one depicting the nativity scene were a popular #art form in the early 1900s. One of the most notable artists at the time was J. J. Lankes, who contributed illustrations to well known authors, like #RobertFrost.

Bringing in the #YuleLog has been a popular #Christmas tradition for centuries. A huge log is dragged to the hearth to burn for the #TwelveDaysOfChristmas. People sat around drinking ale. Remnants were kept to ward off lightning and fire.

35 years ago today, the @UCalgary Dinos defeated @WesternU Mustangs 25-6 to win the 21st Vanier Cup. These tickets were included as part of the sale of Davis Printing assets to Howard Graphic Equipment in 1990. (1/4)
The back of the tickets has logos for Canadian grocery stores which no longer exist. This same year, in 1985, A&P Canada acquired Dominion Stores from Hollinger Inc., a media company founded by @ConradMBlack. In 2005, Metro acquired A&P Canada and rebranded all their stores. 4/4
