Making a movie is so tangible and physical. Your feet hurt. Your hair gets too long. Your jeans develop character (holes). For months you are together as a crew (what a crew!) until you become a unit.

Releasing a movie on the other hand is completely abstract. You get an email saying how it’s doing. The one thing that makes it feel real are the stories people like you share about it.

A film in fact never exists by itself. It is shot out at the speed of light and sound 24 times a second and instantly disappears. It only exists in the minds and hearts of people who see and hear it and think and talk about it. So what we feel today is just immense gratitude to so many people, for seeing it early, for staying up late, for sitting in the front row all the way to the left, for reading the book, for going in blind, for bringing a friend, for your precious and generous undivided attention, for the posts and the drawings and edits and animations and costumes and homemade figurines fer crackin’ ice. You have brought the movie to life with your big beautiful empathetic human brains. You are part of the movie now. So if you are one of the 1000+ artists who worked on it or one of the folks around the world who came out and watched it…

I tend to attract clients who genuinely appreciate the professional structure of the dynamic, and that’s been a refreshing shift from when I first started. Back then, more people tried to blur the line between fantasy and everyday life, as if the time we shared could only be meaningful if it spilled outside the container.

But the container is the point. The clarity, the boundaries, the agreement about what this is and what it isn’t, that’s what allows it to work so well. When someone tries to reshape it into something more familiar, or even just less defined, it usually weakens the very thing they’re enjoying.

It can be tempting to treat a structured dynamic as a substitute or shortcut to a different kind of intimacy than they’re really being offered. Sometimes it’s about ego. Sometimes it’s about loneliness. I find often it’s about wanting to feel chosen in a way that overrides the professional frame.

But once the structure starts to erode, so does the magic. The intentionality, the heightened experience, those exist because of the container. When people insist on breaking it open, the experience loses its shape. Then they eventually go looking for something “better” not realizing they’re the ones dismantling what made it satisfying in the first place, and will likely do so again if they keep repeating the pattern.

It’s almost ironic, because respecting the professional boundaries actually ends up strengthening the interpersonal connection rather than limiting it. It creates a kind of depth that feels easy, and mutual. I genuinely like the time I spend with people who I decide to see over and over again - we don’t need to spill outside the container for the experience to be mutually meaningful. When both people understand this framework, the experience becomes richer, not smaller. There’s trust, clarity, and a shared understanding that makes everything feel more elevated. It’s the kind of connection that stands on its own, and it’s honestly such a special and unique “lowercase r” relationship that I continue to be fascinated by the longer I participate in them.

Anyway this ended up being longer than I planned but the point is, I’m genuinely enjoying the people I’m connecting with these days.

@AdelleSabatier I actually had this very issue earlier this month. My lady had to reduce my planned date from 6 down to 2 hours and hoped I wouldn't just cancel. But I adjusted our event to accommodate, and she worked her end to extend. So we got in a delayed 4 hours and she was very thankful.
