The way it's identified has changed. Before 2013, under DSM-IV, the definition of autism was narrower, and many children who showed signs of developmental or learning difficulties were NOT considered autistic.
When DSM-5 was introduced in 2013, it broadened the criteria, so behaviours that used to be seen as LEARNING DISABILITIES are now often recognised as part of the autism spectrum. As a result, itβs not necessarily that more children have autism, but that weβve become better at recognising and addressing it with more inclusive definitions and greater awareness.
