It’s partly a joke, but it captures how agent engineering is evolving.

A loop lets an agent repeatedly plan, act, test, reflect, and improve until it reaches a stopping condition.

A graph expands that idea to more complex workflows:

multiple agents working in parallel
branching based on results
shared state between tasks
review, retries, and human approval

Loops are not being replaced. A loop is often just one structure inside a larger graph.

The real shift is in what we are designing:

Prompt → Context → Loop → Graph

But more complexity is not always better. If one agent with a clear validation loop can solve the task, there is no reason to make five agents hold a meeting.

Start simple. Add graphs only when the workflow genuinely requires coordination, branching, and state.

At this rate, once everyone finishes drawing graphs, someone will probably ask:

“Are we still talking about graphs, or have we moved on to organizations?”
