One form of Autistic exploitation that I almost never see acknowledged is when folks in a group or organization consistently rely on the resident Autistic to speak truth to power.
When someone tells me that if I'm REALLY autistic, then I would have been evaluated when I was younger.... How about:
• My parents had no idea what the actual traits of Autism were back in the early 90s, and...
@beth_morton ++it isn’t something that makes me disabled like the stuff that’s effecting my ability to do things. If my migraines were to get worse again, I’d definitely consider it a disabling disability for myself again. I like to take into account how many moths since that last ++
@laurenancona Only place that type of stuff should be cited is in a piece criticising everything wrong with harming people to force neurotypical behaviour.
When Autistics and ADHDers respond to something you say by speaking about a similar experience we’ve been through, our objective is to empathise with you, bond with you, and show you that you’re not alone, not to compete with you or divert any attention or support away from you.
@mjcox111@ThePomKat Interesting how that account no longer exists. LOL Anyway, I, for one, appreciate the “over explaining” because it’s helpful with pinpointing what thing is meant. Honestly my favourite part of that scene.
TW: abuse
So you know how they say therapists will not engage in therapy with a couple if abuse is taking place because it doesn’t stop the abuse it just makes the abuser better at gaslighting?
Yeah, so about some white liberals and their “anti-racism” work…
If you’re upset with an autistic person and want them to apologise to you, you’ll have more success if you tell them why you’re upset instead of acting passive aggressively or saying “you know what you did”. We often see things differently and might not intuit how you’re feeling.
Can confirm with mu most recent experience: My only chew-necklace disappeared last week, so I repurchased the same exact kind. I found the missing one yesterday buried in my laundry when I had to dig out an already worn shirt because I didn’t have time to wash my clothes.🙃
@AutisticCallum_ This feels so true. LOL Yesterday during my 2nd evaluation app., I had to respond w/a word association to what word my psych said; 1 of the words was “ominous” & I said “Creepyyy~” in a delighted tone & while he wrote down my response, I casually mentioned I liked that word. XD
One of the cruelest things about Autistic/ADHD masking is that you learn to treat positive emotions as a warning sign that you're about to do something "wrong" and that it is therefore "safest for everyone" if you maintain a constant, low-key negative internal emotional state.
