Αν ήμασταν σοβαροί πολίτες και είχαμε σοβαρή χώρα, ο Στέφανος Μάνος θα έπρεπε να ήταν ισόβιος Υπουργός Ανάπτυξης, αν όχι ισόβιος Πρωθυπουργός. Ευφυής, πρακτικός, doer, εξαιρετικά μορφωμένος, ανοιχτόμυαλος, ευρηματικός, κατάφερε, στο μικρό διάστημα που είχε θέσεις ευθύνης να αφήσει τεράστιο έργο πίσω του, από την ιδιωτικοποίησ�� του ΟΤΕ μέχρι την αναμόρφωση της Πλάκας και τους πεζόδρομους, κι από την Αττική οδό μέχρι το Μετρό. (Έχω γράψει πολλές φορές αναλυτικά για το έργο του Μάνου και θα ξαναγράψω.)
Όμως είχε το θάρρος της γνώμης του, ήταν βαθιά αξιοπρεπής και δεν δεχόταν να υποστηρίζει κομματικές θέσεις κόντρα στη λογική, για λόγους μικροκομματικής σκοπιμότητας όπως ήθελε το σύστημα, ούτε καταδεχόταν να χαϊδεύει τα αυτιά του ψηφοφόρου με ευχάριστα ψέματα, όπως θέλει η συντριπτική πλειονότητα των Ελλήνων.
Γι' αυτό η χώρα τον "τιμώρησε" στέλνοντάς τον στο σπίτι του. Στην πραγματικότητα αυτοτιμωρήθηκε σκληρά η ίδια, διότι στερ��θηκε τις υπηρεσίες ενός τόσο σημαντικού Έλληνα.
Θεωρώ τιμή μου την συμπόρευσή μας στις εκλογές του Ιουνίου του 2012.

The EU Parliament said NO to Chat Control. Then NO again. The exemption expired in April.

So what did they do? Weber (EPP) asked Metsola to reopen the file, the Council adopted the old text as a "new" position on July 2, and the vote ran as a second reading, where rejection needs 361 votes and every absent MEP effectively counts as a YES. The date? The last day before summer recess.

276 votes against wasn't enough. Suspicionless, warrantless scanning of private messages is back, even though the EU's own legal service warned that indiscriminate scanning violates Article 7 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

When "no" doesn't count and you just re-run the vote until you get the right answer, that's not democracy. It's theater.

What we can do:
• Write to your MEPs. Names and votes are public. Remember them at the ballot box.
• Support https://t.co/FLGrjsUpnG and orgs like EDRi
• Switch to end-to-end encrypted apps (Signal). They're not covered by the scanning, for now.
• The permanent Chat Control 2.0 is still being negotiated. That's the real fight. Don't let them pull the same trick twice.

Platforms can now scan your private messages again, officially "voluntary," in practice blanket surveillance.

Here's the democratic scandal: 314 MEPs voted against it. Only 276 voted for it.

It passed anyway... because an absolute majority of all MEPs was required to reject it, not just a majority of those present.

More people voted no than yes. It still passed.

Pushed through on an urgent procedure just before summer recess, when absences are highest and attention is lowest.

This is how rights disappear folks. Not in one dramatic moment, but in procedural fine print, on a slow news day, while everyone's looking at Tehran.

A proposal to stop the new law, which will allow big tech companies to voluntarily scan all private messages, needed an absolute majority of 361 voted but received only 314 votes.

As it was the last day before summer recess, many MEPs had returned to their home countries and didn’t take part in the surprise vote. Chat Control 2.0 is still being prepared. That law will make it mandatory to scan people’s private messages.
