Just received a call from @ChicagosMayor who expressed sympathy, and even conceded that perhaps he hasn’t done the best job in dealing with this and he needs to do more.
I appreciated that.
But I also told him that the actions and rhetoric coming from some of his closest allies contributed to this tragedy, and if he’s serious, he needs to call out those who cross the line and use dangerous rhetoric.
That means calling out some of his own supporters and allies. And I emphasized that he needs to do that publicly. Not just private conversations.
He said I have his word and his commitment. I appreciate that and look forward to seeing his forthcoming statement.
BREAKING: Chicago Public School Board President Rev. Mitchell Johnson has announced his resignation.
Thank you to the more than 40 Chicago aldermen and other elected officials who came together over the last 24 hours to call for a change in leadership. Rev. Mitchell Johnson’s decision to resign from the Chicago Public School Board is in the best interests of our city. Next week, a group of Chicagoans will be elected to our School Board, joining Mayor Brandon Johnson’s appointees, and I hope this group will promote inclusivity and tolerance while delivering a world-class education to our young people and support to parents and caregivers.
With so much more detail of the story emerging in the last two hours alone, I still have a shred of hope that Chicago journalists will ensure it gets the proper coverage it deserves. But only a shred 😒
@chicagotribune, cat got your tongue?
The coverage has been horrific, and the consequences to the community have been real.
Will you apologize and correct, or is a Jew getting shot already old news???
@AnarchoSeg@CWBChicago And here I was starting to think it was “wild flowers”.
I’m sure there’s nothing else about the story that would line up with it being “allahu akhbar” other than confirmation bias.
Two politicians made statements about the Antisemitic hate crime that just occurred in Chicago.
One called out the Antisemitism and stood with the Jewish community.
The other one was written by @ChicagosMayor
This weekend our West Ridge community was struck by an act of gun violence when a member of our vibrant Orthodox Jewish community was shot while walking to his synagogue. I am devastated this violence took place within our neighborhoods, especially during a religious holiday.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his loved ones from this weekend’s shooting incident that took place in Rogers Park. All Chicagoans deserve to feel safe and protected across the city. There is more work to be done, and we are committed to diligently improving community safety in every neighborhood.
Cities and Townships around the country love to claim “hate has no home here”.
Except that’s meaningless if you’re not willing to call out hate when you see it.

Agudah hosts press conference related to this past Shabbos. The message was clear, the orthodox Jewish community faces a unique risk and it must be taken seriously.
Yesterday, Pro-Hamas agitators attempted to disrupt an Agudath Israel event on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention. The gathering was intended in part to bring awareness to growing antisemitism in the U.S., in particular aimed at Orthodox Jews.
The irony of the fact that the mindless slogan-chanters chose to trail Orthodox Jews and try to disrupt a gathering about antisemitism cannot be understated. It demonstrates the societal evil better than any speech or chart.

While this got all of the attention, @AgudahNews deserves major credit for bringing together high-profile Democrats to pledge to fight antisemitism. They do great work and this event exceeded expectations.
The agenda was clear, gathering politicians who are committed to working with Jewish community.
The only thing related to Israel was a prayer recited by parents of a hostage in Gaza. These agitators showed up because we are Jewish. Anti-semitism, plain and simple.
