I’m a make a mistake, own it & learn from it kinda guy. I’m also an Assistant Principal at LHS who truly believes relationships are key to success for all.
In the remaining days of school, you may see some out of character behaviors from some students. Remember that not all students look forward to summer break. For some students, school is their safe place… where they receive consistent food, where they feel most successful, where they are surrounded by kindness and love, and where they can just be themselves. All behaviors are communication. Respond first with empathy and compassion. Thank you for everything you do for our kids! Have an amazing and well-deserved summer break!
I will be traveling the country providing “Maslow Before Bloom” trainings this Summer and Fall. I would love to come to your school or district. Please message or email me for more info [email protected].

Countless children are living some of the most difficult, challenging lives imaginable, yet in far too many cases they are expected to walk into that classroom intrinsically motivated.
Every kid deserves to be treated w/ love, dignity & grace.
EVERY SINGLE. DAY.
No matter what they’ve done.
No matter what they’ve said.
…No matter how they’ve treated you.
Don’t be the person who adds to their trauma by giving up on them. Be their merchant of hope.
When young people lack executive function skills, it can feel like disrespect to an adult. We must remember that we cannot expect adult behaviors from children. They learn life skills in safe spaces filled with grace, examples, and many chances to practice.

Classroom management means I manage the only person I control. Do I stay calm when he gets upset? Am I respectful to disrespectful people? Do I take the behavior personally? Am I allowing the behavior to control my emotions? Do I see it as an annoyance or a challenge?#thatonekid

I'm no expert on remote learning but here are some things that could have helped this week and may help schools transitioning in the next couple of weeks (thread) (1) Post 1 assignment PER WEEK (at least to start) for ALL grade levels.
HS principal who I can safely say speaks for most HS principals: "I'm not worried about credits and graduation. I'm more worried about the mental health of our kids who need to be with us every day." Let's focus on reducing student anxiety & stress. @AWSP_Principals@waOSPI
Sometimes as educators, we need a break from a student.
This brief separation can be healthy & beneficial to the long-term sustainability of the #relationship.
Let’s remember though, this door swings both ways & there are times when a student needs a break from us.

Have a student you're struggling with?
Try the 'two-by-ten' strategy:
For two minutes each day, 10 days in a row, have a personal conversation with the #student about anything the student is interested in.
Wonderfully simple and wildly effective.
