The role of women in our struggle is profound and indispensable. The “Bella Ciao,” a song now synonymous with resistance around the world, was first sung by women who stood against brutal working conditions in the 19th century. In Kenya, the march against femicide remains one of the most peaceful protests in our history. It rekindled our hope for peace and reminded us that the power to mobilize does not belong to politicians alone. Women’s involvement in these movements has transformed the very nature of protests, which were once seen as the domain of men.

These women have boldly challenged the status quo. It was Anita who urged Agwambo to stay home. It was Sylvia who prepared nourishing meals for our front-liners and those hospitalized. Shakira, unyielding, faced down the police and declared that enough was enough. Wanjira enlightened us about the struggles in informal settlements. Tarus took a stand against the politicians who embezzled funds intended for education.
Hanifa crowdfunded for hospital bills, upkeep and aftercare for the injured and a decent send off for our political martyrs. She showed us good stewardship and how much we can achieve with a fraction of what our politicians steal.
Our sisters shed tears for us when we returned home and marched alongside us whenever they could. Our lovers welcomed us back with the warmth of their kisses.

Yet, despite their sacrifices, they still bear the brunt of our cruelty, enduring slurs and shame simply for existing. To every woman in this struggle, your dedication does not go unnoticed. Thank you for your unwavering commitment.

You are the heartbeat of our fight.
