Bad yes, but not quite as catastrophic as the result suggests.
My bigger concern is structural.
Piroe & Taty want to occupy similar spaces. And without Pablo, Nuno's 4-4-2 loses the player who makes it work.
There were hints of a solution in the second half.
78% possession.
25 shots.
43 touches in their box.
And we lost 2-1.
West Ham had all the ball against Charlton, but very little control.
Why the Taty-Piroe partnership didn't work, the case for more Orford & Mukasa, and what Nuno needs to change.

West Ham's team if the fans were the manager:
Spiegel
Jordan Spence, Golambeckis, Casey, D. Potts
F. Potts Coventry
Samuelsen Earthy Parfitt-Williams

After a rude awakening, West Ham take on their first home game of the season against Charlton Athletic.
I’ve written a preview of how we should approach the game, and how I’d suggest we line up.

Did lots of things well there with an academy pairing in the middle. Orford very good again and Kante with some excellent work down the flank for our second. Hope Pablo is alright as it was evident, once again, how much we lose without him out there.
Key players went missing in that second half - particularly Orford and Bowen. If JWP was a tactical sub to retain possession, it failed.
Engels will add a lot to our midfield, we also need a new 6 if Edson and Magassa are off
Not going to pile in on Scarles, he has had mistakes like this in the past and bounced back from them. Was a bad tackle but he’d been solid until that point. We’ll need him and Diouf to get through this season
Competing well so far in midfield even without Alvarez. Gotten away with a few counter attacks but pleased with both Orford and Kanté’s performance
Surprised with how much possession we’ve had, Burnley seem to be setting up for counters. Expect that to change

Hoping he plays, we are light in so many positions but particularly in midfield doing the job he does. Not seen enough to trust that Orford and Kante can do it themselves. We might actually be better served by drafting Scarles or Veltman as a break-glass CDM.
Edson Alvarez could potentially miss the game against Burnley due to questions over his future, following a club weighing up making a move for him.
However, this has not been confirmed and talks will continue today regarding his place at West Ham.

Not the end of the world if Engels isn't registered in time for Burnley. I'm always hesitant to throw a new player in at the deep end.
I'm also happy that Alvarez, Kante & Orford would give us enough retention and physicality. Key thing is to be direct playing into Taty & Jarrod.
Slightly pre-empting the announcement, but new post & a new series - What We've Bought!
Get to know West Ham's newest midfielder from all Engels.
We have a team of runners, can Arne Engels pick them out?

Made a substack to start writing about West Ham. I've begun by looking at where we are, and why we won't just be strolling back to the Premier League. Would love to hear feedback on writing, content, any other topics to cover!
