Today is Kargil Vijay Diwas

Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 26 July to commemorate India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War against Pakistan.

Why is it celebrated?

In May July 1999, Pakistani soldiers and armed infiltrators occupied strategic mountain peaks on the Indian side of the Line of Control in the Kargil sector of Ladakh. India launched Operation Vijay to recapture these positions.

After nearly three months of intense fighting in extremely high-altitude conditions, the Indian Armed Forces regained the occupied territory. On 26 July 1999, India officially declared the success of Operation Vijay, and that date has since been observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
