NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! On this day in 1979, Prince released his 2nd album, the self titled Prince.
The album produced five singles, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?, Still Waiting, Sexy Dancer, and Bambi. Initially, I Wanna Be Your Lover and I Feel For You were written for Patrice Rushen who was working on her own album at the time. She declined the songs. Although years later, Chaka Khan would record I Feel For You to great chart success.
The album is Prince on all vocals and instruments although Prince did acknowledge that Andre Cymone provided background vocals on Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad. Additionally, Andre and Bobby Z were credited as "heaven sent helpers" in the credits leaving many to wonder if there were more uncredited contributions.
NAME that track! I'll go first. SO many great songs here, but something about When We're Dancing Close And Slow that is super haunting. Very cool chord structures. But this album is fire front to back.

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 25 Years Ago Today, @prince released his 24th studio album The Rainbow Children via the NPG Music Club as one long single track.
I have spoken publicly regarding how much I love this album and its beautiful esthetic and flow. It is so expertly mixed and big that it simply doesn't sound like anything else. Plus it showed his eclecticism by dabbling in jazz, soul, funk, R&B, and little bit of hip hop (take a load off sweetie darling).
While many folks were turned off by the "God voice" that is the narrator of the album, it's not an issue for me. I'm not sure the album would have been able to maintain its theme and storyline that he was trying to tell without it. Although, most folks (including myself) don't fully follow the storyline anyway. Almost, but not fully.
The album is mostly Prince on all instruments with exception of John Blackwell making his debut on a Prince album playing drums on most of the tracks, and Larry Graham on bass on The Work Pt. 1 and Last December. The Hornheadz also played on five tracks, with Najee on saxophone and flute on some tracks. Background vocals were also contributed on some songs by Milenia, Kip Blackshire, Morris Hayes, and Femi Jiya.
This album sits comfortably in my top 3 albums for Prince which is shocking to some, and it wasn't even one that grew on me. I "got it" right out of the gate. It was grown folks music and I guess I was fully grown.
My favorites? That frigging title track is amazing and of course, those funk tracks, 1+1+1 Is 3, Everlasting Now, and Family Name. The latter by the way earned me a shout out from Prince in Atlanta when I was dancing all alone with everyone else seated around me, and Prince yells out, "I see you back there." and pointed right at me. That would also be the night I first got a chance to meet and talk with him. So it goes without saying, this album and the accompanying One Nite Alone tour hold a very special place in my heart.

45 years with Controversy 💜
On this day in 1981, Prince released his fourth album, Controversy, marking today as the 45th anniversary! Released just 12 months after Dirty Mind, Controversy demonstrated Prince's evolving worldview and further demonstrated a growing resistance to the political tensions that shaped the era.
With powerful singles such as Sexuality, Let's Work and and of course, Controversy, Prince articulated a new declaration of freedom, “let your body be free."
What track from Controversy forever shaped you?
Arguably the most underrated Prince album. Likely because it dropped between his boldest album and one of the most influential albums of all time. But to me Controversy is one of the best encapsulations of Prince as an artist and as an individual.

On this day in 1992, Prince and the New Power Generation released Love Symbol. The album title, techincally unpronounceable, was referred to as Love Symbol due to the language included on the CD's spine that read "Love Symbol Album". Upon the release of Love Symbol, Prince debuted iconic tracks such as Sexy M.F. and My Name Is Prince.
With many other funky and vibrant tracks to name, let us know your favorite!
@Neo_Manifesto Thats why I’m hoping there’s a finished configuration of the three-disc version of The Dawn somewhere. It would be the perfect encapsulation of that era and likely one of his best works
If any Prince “fan” tries to dismiss his post-80’s output, especially this album, then their music opinion is irrelevant. Easily one of his greatest albums imo
NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! 34 Years Ago Today, Prince released his 14th studio album, the Love Symbol album. It was the last album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation before he changed his name to the unpronounceable Symbol that was featured on this album's cover.
All of the songs were written specifically for the album with the exception of re-recording The Flow which was originally written in 1990.
The album contains two segues, featuring the late actress Kirstie Alley as reporter "Vanessa Bartholomew" in an attempt to create a storyline. While there were more segues created that helped better serve the narrative, Prince removed them. Sounds like a good future addition for a Deluxe release, no?
While 8 of the songs are solo performances by Prince, the remaining 8 tracks feature Michael B. on drums, Sonny T. on bass guitar, Tommy Barbarella on keyboards, Levi Seacer, Jr. on rhythm guitar, and the rapping trio of Tony M. (lead rapper), Damon Dickson, and Kirk Johnson (percussion and background vocals). Additionally, the five-piece horn section of Mike Nelson, Kathy J., Dave Jensen, Brian Gallagher and Steve Strand contributed horns to some tracks.
Prince toured extensively to support the album on the Act 1 and Act 2 tours. The album produced five commercially-released singles, Sexy M.F., My Name Is Prince, 7, Damn U, and The Morning Papers. Name that track!
