These aren't necessarily bad drawings but the originals were sort of sanrio like. Hello Kitty would look less like Hello Kitty if she had thinner outlines and was more 3-dimensional.
It's sort of like when Iwao Takamoto did some of his own takes on the classic Hanna Barbera characters for licensing and reboots. Great drawings by a talented artist but they don't work as well because they were designed to be UPA-like and Iwao made them Disney-like.

Always amusing how many great artists I've seen admit to not being able to nail the girls. The curse of sanrio-style characters. One of the show's art directors (Don Shank) even said they're tricky to get right (and that Craig McCracken is picky about them 🤫)
Here's Craig Mccracken's third "Whoopass Girls" film from Calarts. This one in particular is interesting because it's kind of an early version of the "Monkey See, Doggie Do" episode
