PRESS RELEASE
The Ophthalmology Society of Uganda has become aware of this video currently circulating on social media in which an individual claims that massaging the eyes with hot water ( better at boiling point) can cure cataracts, refractive errors and other eye diseases.
We write with the utmost urgency to inform the Ugandan public that this claim is medically false.
The individual in the video presents this practice as a remedy with no scientific evidence whatsoever.
We strongly advise against applying any unprescribed substances in the absence of guidance from a qualified ophthalmic health worker. Self-treatment of eye conditions based on social media advice is always dangerous.
We urge every Ugandan who has seen this video to seek care from a qualified ophthalmic health worker for any concerns about your vision or eye health

Sometimes the first sign is a white reflection in the eye, a sudden squint, or eyes that seem to glow under light.
As we mark Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, Dr. Faith Nakubulwa, President of the Ophthalmology Society of Uganda and Ophthalmologist at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, shares why these signs in young children should never be ignored and why early eye checkups matter.
Watch as she highlights how early diagnosis can help save sight and save lives.
