In a remarkable display of gratitude, hundreds of Beninese civilians lined the streets to cheer and celebrate Nigerian troops as they passed through. This was after the Nigerian and Beninese forces, backed by the NAF, conducted a series of joint operations on Sunday that eliminated more than 150 JNIM terrorists.
Operations of this nature along the western frontier make it far more difficult for Sahel-based terrorist groups to infiltrate Nigeria through that axis.
Now contrast this with our northern frontier, where strained ties between Nigeria and Niger have severely hampered counter-terrorism efforts. There is no cross-border intelligence sharing or joint military operations. What this has done is create security vacuums along our notoriously porous borders that terrorists have happily exploited.
This is where Nigeria’s decision to back down from the intervening in Niger shortly after the 2023 coup carry a direct cost, the exacerbation of cross-border terrorism. The passive stance Nigeria adopted exposed our porous northern borders to the free movement of militant groups, arms smuggling, and the expansion of terrorist groups like ISWAP, Lakurawa.
The lessons are clear: Nigeria must never again allow ethnic or religious sensibilities to stand in the way of sound strategic decision making.
The NDC cannot subject people to primary elections only for the party to collect money from unpopular candidates who failed the primaries and then declare them the winners.
Just take a look at the results these people are trying so hard to change.
