Please help me honor Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler, 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force)

He enlisted in the Army in 1995 as an infantryman, earned his way into the 75th Ranger Regiment, and in 2004 was selected into Delta Force. Over two decades he deployed again and again to Afghanistan and Iraq, roughly 14 combat tours in all, and collected 11 Bronze Stars, four of them with valor.

On October 22, 2015, Wheeler was part of a joint raid with Kurdish forces on an ISIS prison compound north of Hawija in Iraq. Intelligence indicated roughly 70 hostages were about to be executed. When the assault stalled under enemy fire, Wheeler did what men of his caliber are trained to do: he moved to the sound of the gunfire. He helped breach the compound and was struck by small-arms fire. He became the first American service member killed by enemy action while fighting ISIS, and the first US combat death in Iraq since 2011.

The raid succeeded, and the hostages were freed. Wheeler was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart, and laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. He was a husband and a father of four sons, the youngest only months old when he was killed.

A Ranger, a Delta operator, and a father from Oklahoma who ran toward the fighting so 70 strangers could live.

While he was out for a morning run, terrorists broke into his home and murdered his parents, Yaniv and Yasmin, and his two sisters, Keshet and Tchelet. Ariel returned to find that he was the only survivor, left completely alone.

His story touched my heart deeply because my grandmother also lost her entire family in the Holocaust when she was 14.

The combat footage follows “Mozzie,” an Australian combat medic serving with Med Team Alpha, during a combat mission in Stepnohirsk, where the group was tasked with clearing a high-rise building. Russian troops had taken up positions on one of the floors, forcing Mozzie and his team to push through the building floor by floor. 2:32

When they reached the occupied level, heavy fighting erupted at close range. 16:55 One of the soldiers was wounded, 17:10 and Mozzie immediately began rendering first aid. While he was treating the wounded man, the enemy threw a grenade, further escalating the situation. 18:34

The team held the position long enough to stabilize the wounded soldier before pulling him off the floor and moving him down through the building for casualty evacuation.

Mozzie was recently killed in action in Ukraine. He is remembered by those who served alongside him as a dedicated combat medic who repeatedly put himself in danger to treat and evacuate wounded soldiers. This footage documents one of those missions and serves as a tribute to his service and sacrifice. RIP!!!!!!!
