Today, Asdap provided learning materials for 200 pupils (3/7 classes), but the need is massive. The rainy season is here & the walls are collapsing.

Building Arewa’s Future: Beyond Funding – Designing a Sustainable Shark Tank Model for Northern Nigeria

The recent proposal by @CaptJamyl to establish a Shark Tank-style investment platform for Arewa youth, with over ₦100 million already raised, is both commendable and timely.

Northern Nigeria is rich in entrepreneurial potential, yet constrained by limited access to structured capital, mentorship, and markets. Initiatives like this can bridge that gap but only if designed with sustainability at their core.

We must learn from past interventions.

Programs such as the Buhari-era loan schemes showed that access to funds alone does not guarantee impact. In many cases, weak governance structures, poor monitoring, and lack of accountability diluted the intended outcomes.

To ensure this initiative succeeds where others struggled, I propose a model built on six critical pillars:

1. Pilot Phase & Controlled Rollout
The program should begin with a localized pilot in no more than two states. This allows for proper supervision, hands-on support, and real-time problem solving. A pilot period of 6 months to 1 year will enable the team to identify gaps, test assumptions, and refine the model before scaling.

2. Rigorous Selection & Due Diligence
Funding should be merit-based, with strong emphasis on viability, scalability, and the entrepreneur’s track record. A transparent, multi-stage vetting process is essential.

3. Structured Accountability Framework
This initiative should not operate as a grant culture. Whether equity-based, revenue-sharing, or milestone-driven funding, there must be clear obligations. Introducing guarantors or surety systems can further strengthen accountability.

4. Monitoring, Evaluation & Performance Tracking
Success should be measured, not assumed. Beneficiaries must be tracked against defined KPIs, with periodic reviews tied to continued support.

5. Business Development & Coaching
Capital without capacity is a risk. Structured mentorship, training, and access to experienced operators will significantly improve business survival rates.

6. Market Access & Ecosystem Support
One of the biggest challenges for SMEs is not starting, but scaling. Supporting beneficiaries with branding, distribution, and market linkage will be critical to long-term success.

Ultimately, this initiative must move beyond disbursement to institution building, creating a replicable model for grassroots investment across Northern Nigeria.

If properly structured, this could become one of the most impactful private-sector-led youth empowerment platforms in the region.

The opportunity is not just to fund businesses but to build a system that consistently produces successful entrepreneurs.
