King Harald is dead, and the country🇳🇴 is silent.

We do not grieve a distant majesty. We grieve someone we knew. He laughed when he was glad. He wept when life was hard, and he never hid it.

He carried these last difficult years the way the rest of us must carry ours. With dignity, but without pretending it came at no cost. Perhaps that is why he felt so close. He showed us that even a king can hurt and struggle.

He made us proud. Not because he stood above the people, but because he belonged to us.

Those who grieve the most today may be the ones we otherwise notice the least. The Sámi. Queer people. Immigrants. Those who think differently, or live with something that makes the days heavier. To them, Harald said what no king had said as clearly before him, that Norway is their country too. Norway is us. Norway is you.

We wanted someone above us. We got someone who stood beside us.
