No showcase?🥲
🍀: Then since there's a fan-con, does that mean there's no showcase...? If so, it would've been nice if you let us know in advance. A lot of fans were looking forward to the showcase and probably took time off from work beforehand, so I feel like some people might have used their leave for nothing🥲
🐰: There were various circumstances... but I'll make sure to ask them to notice everyone in advance next time🥺🩷
I think Somnias are extra disappointed not just because Handong did a mistake, but it's also because Dreamcatcher and the members themselves have always shown and promoted as alt-leaning/woke in mindset — speaking out about societal issues, queer rights, etc ++
I'd like to share my thoughts on the recent discussion about Handong one last time.
As a Chinese person who lives within Chinese-speaking online communities, I have indeed seen discussions about this doll being controversial. However, not everyone has come across those news or paid attention to them. In any case, these differences come down to individual experiences and awareness. What has bothered me is seeing some people assume that Chinese people as a whole share this kind of "malice".
I feel uncomfortable with that misunderstanding as well, so I tried to provide some context (posts on Chinese SNS that raised concerns or criticism about the circulation of such dolls). But that doesn't mean I think Handong did it intentionally. Objectively speaking, it is difficult for many Chinese people to fully relate to racial issues surrounding skin color and even less so to be racists because of them.
At the same time, I am disappointed by this incident because it suggests that neither she nor her team pays much attention to social issues. Perhaps they focus only on singing, dancing, and their careers. In my view, that falls short of the standard a truly excellent artist should have.
I am an individual, a Somnia, and also a member of the society I live in. These identities can coexist. I hope everyone can follow their own conscience and look at the situation objectively, without turning it into something bigger than it is or stereotyping entire groups of people (although I know that's almost impossible🙁
