There is a particular kind of beauty in arriving at Ashesi University’s hilltop campus in Berekuso, a campus where indigenous and contemporary architecture meet in quiet conversation, creating a harmonious, green, and deliberately sustainable atmosphere. It is the kind of environment that does not simply house learning; it elevates it. Every structure, every open space, seems designed with both heritage and the future in mind.
During my visit to Ashesi, I was reminded almost immediately of the university’s founding mission: 'to educate a new generation of ethical, entrepreneurial leaders in Africa; to cultivate critical thinking skills, concern for others, and the courage it will take to transform a continent'. That mission is not merely stated; it is visible.
Guided by Ms Cynthia Anabah, I was taken through some of the campus’s most meaningful spaces. At the Centre for African Popular Culture, I encountered collections carefully assembled over the years, a quiet but powerful reflection of the continent’s cultural memory. At the Archer Cornfield, where graduation ceremonies and the university’s traditional Town Hall meetings are held, I sensed the weight of tradition. It is a space where students, faculty, and staff gather each semester to confront the challenges and possibilities facing not only Ashesi, but Africa itself.
In the lecture halls, I saw the curriculum come alive. Leadership and entrepreneurship are woven into the academic fabric, alongside Ashesi’s e-learning model, which showcases the systems and platforms sustaining a genuinely modern, tech-enabled learning experience. At one of the campus’s social spaces, I met students immersed in bead-making and international food tasting, recreational and cultural moments that gave me an unfiltered glimpse into the rhythm of student life. At the Todd and Ruth Warren Library, I encountered an expansive collection of books, electronic resources, and printing facilities, a reminder of the depth of scholarship the university supports. And at the memorial unveiled this year in commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, I was struck by Ashesi’s commitment to remembrance, learning, and the promotion of peace, values that transcend any single discipline.
It was during this same visit, last Friday, that I took part in the Dialogue Series with Emeritus Professor Kwesi Yankah, a conversation on youth in national governance that revealed, once again, the earnestness, intellectual depth, and clarity of purpose with which Ashesi’s students engage with the world.
Taken together, the campus, the curriculum, and the conversations affirmed something larger for me: Ashesi is raising the bar for tertiary education in Ghana, combining rigour, innovation, and meaningful industry impact in a way few institutions on the continent can match. Its graduates are not simply credentialled; they are equipped to lead.
Leaving that campus, I felt a renewed optimism about Ghana’s path forward. Our nation’s future rests in the hands of a generation being trained to think critically, build meaningfully, and lead with conviction. That is the Ghana I believe in.

Founder and Creative Director Kelvin Agyei Darko shared some of the operational challenges affecting customer experience at AJ Vanush Bespoke during a conversation with an Ashesi student. That exchange led the business to Ashesi University's applied capstone project, where student consultants Dey, Thannie, and Agyeman Prempeh partnered with the company to help structure it for growth. The team developed a process manual, an onboarding path, a brand guide, and a content calendar that the business can continue to build on. Read more: https://t.co/rmqsAGpeAu

For her final year project, Elyse Addison '26 designed a smart food scanner for real-time detection of bacterial contamination in fresh produce. Using fluorescence-based imaging, the system detects contamination and triggers targeted sterilization with UV-C light or a fine-mist spray. Designed to operate autonomously, the system aims to improve food safety by enabling faster detection of contamination. Watch the full series: https://t.co/JQsWc9Rr7U

Behind every graduate is a family that believed first. We asked Ashesi parents what Commencement 2026 means to them, and the answer, again and again, was pride, joy, and gratitude. The Dey and Agamah families, first interviewed in 2022 when their children arrived at Ashesi, reflect on the journey of growth four years later.
