Today, as part of my tour in New York, I had the privilege to brief the A3, on the situation of Central African region on the implementation of #UNOCA mandate, the working relationship with the A3 and the UN Security council @UNSC_Reports as well as the presidential election in Sao Tomé and Principe. La 20ème Session extraordinaire de la Conférence de l'Union africaine, tenue à Accra sous la présidence de Son Excellence  Evariste Ndayishimiye (@GeneralNeva ), Chef de l'État Burundais et Président en exercice de l'Union Africaine, s'est achevée ce 22 juillet 2026.

Consacrée à la justice sanitaire et à la couverture santé universelle en Afrique, elle s'est conclue par l'adoption d'une déclaration réaffirmant l'engagement des Chefs d'État et de Gouvernement à promouvoir la justice, l'équité et la couverture sanitaire universelle :mettre fin au sida et à la tuberculose, améliorer la santé maternelle et lutter contre les maladies non transmissibles endémiques et les maladies tropicales négligées en Afrique.

Son Excellence Evariste Ndayishimiye a dans son mot de cloture indiqué que la Session a mis en lumière trois priorités stratégiques qui guideront l’action commune dans les années à venir : le développement de la fabrication locale de produits médicaux afin de renforcer la souveraineté sanitaire de l’Afrique ; la mobilisation de ressources nationales et de mécanismes innovants de financement pour assurer la pérennité des  investissements dans la santé ; et le renforcement de la gouvernance, du leadership politique et de la redevabilité pour transformer les engagements en résultats concrets au bénéfice des populations africaines. 

Le Président Ndayishimiye a exhorté à la solidarité sanitaire africaine, non pas comme une aspiration, mais une architecture, celle d'une Afrique qui se soigne par elle-même, qui produit ses propres réponses et qui ne subit plus, mais anticipe.

Il a en outre salué les engagements volontaires annoncés par plusieurs délégations au cours de cette 20ème Session. Des engagements qui selon lui constituent un signal fort de la volonté de passer des déclarations aux actions.

Son Excellence Evariste Ndayishimiye a réaffirmé que l’Afrique dispose aujourd’hui des compétences, des institutions et de la volonté politique nécessaires pour prendre en main son destin sanitaire et assurer un suivi rigoureux des engagements pris à Accra.

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, was received this evening at the Jubilee House in #Accra by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of #Ghana on the margins of the AU Health Summit.

President Mahama expressed his appreciation to the Chairperson for convening the AU Extraordinary Summit on Sustainable Health Financing, Domestic Health Manufacturing & Research in Accra, & reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to supporting the implementation of the Summit's outcomes. He expressed the hope that all AU Member States would similarly translate the decisions of the Summit into concrete action, noting that the Accra Declaration is fully aligned with the African Union's vision of strengthening the continent's self-reliance through expanded local production of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, & diagnostics.

The President further highlighted Ghana's continued investments in strengthening its national health system & expanding access to quality primary healthcare as part of the country's broader commitment to achieving universal health coverage. He also expressed appreciation to the AU Commission for its support for Ghana's initiative on reparatory justice at the UN General Assembly, which received the backing of the majority of UN Member States.

The Chairperson thanked President Mahama for Ghana's exemplary leadership in hosting the successful Extraordinary Summit & expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the Government & the people of Ghana to all participating delegations. He commended President Mahama's leadership & reaffirmed Ghana's important contribution to advancing the AU's #Agenda2063. He also applauded Ghana's progress in strengthening domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, describing it as an important example of the continental ambition to build resilient & self-sustaining health systems.

The Chairperson @ymahmoudali & President Mahama @JDMahama also exchanged views on recent incidents affecting African migrants in parts of the continent. They reaffirmed the AU's shared commitment to the protection of the rights, dignity & safety of all African citizens wherever they reside, underscoring the importance of addressing such challenges in a spirit of solidarity, dialogue & respect for the rule of law, while preserving the longstanding bonds of brotherhood & cooperation among AU Member States.

At the Extraordinary Session of the @AfricanUnion Assembly on Africa's Health in Accra, #Ghana, hosted by H.E. @JDMahama , President of the Republic of Ghana, & chaired by H.E. @GeneralNeva , President of the Republic of Burundi & Chairperson of the African Union (AU), the Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, @ymahmoudali, called for a decisive shift from commitments to implementation in advancing Africa's #health agenda.

In his keynote address, he underscored that the AU Roadmap to 2030 & Beyond is Africa's implementation compact, designed to end AIDS, eliminate preventable maternal & child deaths, combat communicable & non-communicable diseases, strengthen resilient health systems, & advance Universal Health Coverage.

Emphasising that Africa's health sovereignty depends on stronger domestic financing, local manufacturing of #medicines & #vaccines, robust regulatory systems, research & innovation, & sustained political leadership, he urged Member States to translate the Accra Declaration & national pledges into measurable action.

"Future generations will remember this Summit not for our speeches, but for whether we changed the trajectory of health in Africa."
