The 1978 Ranga-Billa case involved the brutal kidnapping and murder of teenage siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra in Delhi by career criminals Kuljeet Singh (Ranga) and Jasbir Singh (Billa).

The horrific crime shocked the nation, leading to a massive manhunt and the swift conviction of both killers, who were ultimately hanged in 1982.

The investigation was led by Inspector VP Gupta of the Delhi Police, with SI Ram Chander serving on the team. A bystander, who had tried to save the children, and later helped the police identify the killers by providing their descriptions was Babulal. The journalist who covered the case was Prabha Dutt.

Amazon Prime's series Raakh, which is based on this incident, replaces Inspector VP Gupta with SI Jayprakash Jatav, explicitly portrayed as a Dalit officer navigating institutional bias. Furthermore, SI Ram Chander is replaced by SI Javed Murtaza, Babulal by Saleem, and Prabha Dutt by Nisar, while a lazy hawaldar character named Mishra has been added to the narrative.

This isn't creative liberty. Creative liberty is meant to enhance a story, not distort historical facts to fit a specific ideological agenda. Another stark reminder of how easily history can be rewritten in plain sight under the convenient guise of creative freedom.

��न्नामलै ने इस महीने तमिलनाडु में हुई 3-4 यौन हिंसा की घटनाओं में संलिप्त लोगों को ‘नॉर्थ इंडियन’ कहते हुए अपने ट्वीट में सात बार बताया है कि ‘नॉर्थ इंडियन’ ऐसा कर रहे हैं।

NCRB के आँकड़ों के अनुसार, तमिलनाडु में हर दिन औसतन 30 रेप/यौन हिंसा की घटनाएँ होती हैं। यानी जून में 450 घटनाएँ घटित हुई होंगी, इस वर्ष 5,000, और अन्ना को नॉर्थ इंडियन्स को घेरना है। बाकी के हर रेप में तमिल व्यक्ति ही संलिप्त होगा, उस��ा तो डेटा रखते होंगे तुम लोग?

अन्नामलै चाहते तो बिहार-यूपी-झारखंड-बंगाल या जिस भी राज्य के थे, वैसे लिख सकते थे। उन्होंने चुना ‘नॉर्थ इंडियन’ क्योंकि यही शब्द वहाँ की निम्नस्तरीय राजनीति के लिए चलन में है।

अपराध हर जगह होते हैं, हर राज्य का व्यक्ति करता है। कहीं कम, कहीं अधिक। हाँ, अपनी नई राजनीति को मेनस्ट्रीम करने के लिए अन्नामलै किसी दिन हाथ में टिन का डब्बा और काला पेंट ले कर ‘हिन्थी’ साइनबोर्ड को काला करने सड़क पर दिख जाएँ, तो हमें आश्चर्य नहीं होगा।

इसे ही हम ‘हिन्दू हृदय सम्राट’ से ले कर पता नहीं क्या-क्या बना रहे थे। ‘नॉर्थ इंडिया’ में इसकी लोकप्रियता आज भी है, पर यह अधम श्रेणी का कार्य है।

His name is Harekala Hajabba.

For decades he has sold oranges from a small cart near the bus stand in Mangaluru, Karnataka. He earns around a hundred and fifty rupees a day.

He has never been to school and cannot read or write. By every measure the world uses, he is a poor, unlettered fruit seller.

One day, sometime in the 1990s, a foreign couple stopped at his cart and asked him, in English, the price of his oranges. He could not understand them and could not answer. They walked away.

The moment did not anger him. It shamed him. Then it changed him.

He decided that no child in his village should ever have to stand there the way he had, unable to understand a simple question, locked out by language and the lack of a school.

His village, Newpadpu, did not have one. The nearest school was about seven kilometres away.

So an illiterate orange seller earning a hundred and fifty rupees a day set out to build a school. He saved his coins, approached officials and donors, and donated his own land.

In the year 2000, the school opened with twenty-eight children in a place that had never had one.

Today that school teaches up to Class 10 and has around a hundred and seventy-five students. Children from his village now study in classrooms he helped build from the price of oranges.

People began calling him Akshara Santha, the saint of letters.

In 2020, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, one of the nation’s highest civilian honours. He walked up barefoot, wearing a plain white dhoti, to receive it.

He said it was not his award. It belonged to the school.

He still sells oranges and has said he wants to use whatever he earns and receives to build a college next.

A man who could not answer one question in English made sure thousands of children after him would never be left speechless the same way.

पटना में परीक्षार्थी सफोकेशन से मर गया घुट-घुट के। सेशन पर जो अराजकता की स्थिति थी, वह हम सबने देखी। विद्यार्थियों को इस देश में कीड़े-मकोड़े की तरह देखा जाता है।

रैंडम जगह पर सेंटर होंगे ताकि बच्चे अधिकतम समस्याओं का सामना कर सकें। उन्हें एक दिन पहले जाना पड़े, रेल में भीड़ हो, सड़कों पर जाम लगे।

कोई लॉजिक नहीं है बगले के जिले की जगह तीन सौ किलोमीटर दूर सेंटर देने का। कुत्तों की तरह हमारी शिक्षा व्यवस्था इन्हें ट्रीट करती है।

छात्र मर रहे हैं, मारे जा रहे हैं, आंदोलन कर रहे हैं, लीक हुए पेपर की दोबारा परीक्षा दे रहे हैं, और नीरो बंसी बजा रहा है। उसे कोई पॉलिसी नहीं लानी, मरते रहो।

ऐसी निष्ठुर सत्ता, ऐसी घटिया व्यवस्था, ऐसी उपेक्षा मैंने पहले नहीं देखी।
