Here’s the story of Ranjish. 💔

He was 38, a bus conductor. He married the girl he loved and had a daughter.

Two years later, his wife left them both and moved to the Gulf. There she found another man, fell in love, and abandoned Ranjish and her daughter.

Ranjish raised his daughter alone for 8 years, pouring every drop of his love and strength into her.

Then his ex-wife filed a case. He fought desperately for the child he had brought up with his own hands. But the court sent the daughter to her mother and “stepfather.”

He lost his wife. Then the system took his daughter too.

Completely broken, Ranjish took his own life.

Apparently, men seem to have no rights in this society. No one sees their pain, their struggles, their silent battles.

What Finland Did About Male Suicide, And What Australia Can Learn...

In the late 1980s, Finland faced one of the highest suicide rates in Europe, concentrated among men: rural, middle-aged, isolated, often drinking heavily.

Instead of repeating the familiar line that “men just won’t seek help” Finland asked a better question: Who is dying, where, and why?

They launched a national study examining every single suicide in one year through detailed psychological autopsies. The data showed clear risk clusters: rural men, alcohol misuse, rejected military conscripts, and people with no prior mental health contact.

Then they acted...

In 1992, Finland implemented a National Suicide Prevention Project with a bold goal: reduce suicides by 20% in ten years. It mobilised schools, churches, the military, media, addiction services, hunting clubs and local communities.

Key principles:
• Target high-risk male groups directly
• Bring support to where men already are (army barracks, forests, workplaces)
• Train local gatekeepers such as clergy, teachers, police, journalists
• Mandate follow-ups after suicide attempts
• Treat male suicide as a gendered issue

Projects like Hyvä Mehtäkaveri trained hunters to look out for their “hunting mate”. Rejected conscripts were offered vocational and social support, instead of stigma.

It worked.

Suicides fell by 20% during implementation. By 2023, Finland’s male suicide rate had dropped 61% from its 1990 peak.

Finland proved something vital: male suicide is preventable when a nation chooses to see men clearly and respond precisely.

Australia now faces persistently high male suicide rates. The lesson from Finland is not more slogans or hotlines alone. It is:

1️⃣ Conduct deep, case-level research
2️⃣ Name men explicitly as a priority
3️⃣ Build prevention into everyday male spaces
4️⃣ Fund long-term, locally tailored strategies
5️⃣ Mobilise whole communities, not just clinicians

If a small Nordic nation can massively reduce the harm from suicide, then so can we.

The question isn't whether male suicide can be reduced. The question is whether we are willing to do the hard, coordinated work to reduce it.

Lives depend on that answer.
