These marine predators are Cnidarians and are armed with cnidocytes (stinging cells). These stinging cells are used to catch prey or as a defense mechanism against predators

Red Sea urchin; Mesocentrotus Franciscans. These can ravenously eat kelp with special jaws (Aristotle’s lantern). Left to their own devices they can completely destroy kelp beds, leaving areas known as “urchin barrens” in their wake

Monterey sea lemon, Doris montereyensis 🍋

Found from Alaska to San Diego, CA, this species of sea slug, a dorid nudibranch, has seven retractable gills and can grow up to 15 cm long. This cutie was found during low tide on 1/15/21 🌊
