THE SIMILARITIES OF DURGA AND SHAHID MINAR
--- One: Structure
Shaheed Minar: The Shaheed Minar consists of five structures. The tall central structure symbolizes an affectionate mother. On either side, there are two and two, totaling four pillars, which represent two sons and two daughters.
Durga Mandap: In the Durga Mandap, there are five idols. In the center is Durga, the mother, flanked on one side by her two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, and on the other side by her two daughters, Saraswati and Lakshmi.
---Two: Platform or Base
Shaheed Minar: The elevated ground on which the Shaheed Minar is built is called the platform or base. This platform is considered sacred. For this reason, one must go barefoot to offer flowers at the base of the Shaheed Minar. Entering the platform with shoes or slippers is a punishable offense. You may face jail time or fines of varying durations.
Durga Mandap: The elevated place where the idols of gods and goddesses are installed is also called a platform. Hindus consider the base of the idols sacred, so one must go there barefoot. If you wear shoes, the temple guards will punish you.
--- Three: Alpana (Traditional Art)
Shaheed Minar: Alpana is drawn on the path leading to the base of the Shaheed Minar. Alpana means "auspicious designs drawn on floors, walls, stairs, etc."
Durga Mandap: During the puja, alpana is drawn. Alpana means "auspicious designs drawn by Hindus on floors, walls, stairs, etc."
--- Four: Paying Homage and Its Representation
Shaheed Minar: The martyrs are not physically present. This pillar is their symbol. By offering flowers to this symbol in their absence, we show them respect and reverence.
Durga Mandap: All the idols are for the priests to behold; the deities are not within the reach of the priests, so they are worshipped, revered, and honored through their idols.
The Oxford Dictionary defines a "minar" as a tall, slender structure, part of a mosque with a balcony from which the muezzin calls Muslims to prayer.
If you search "minar" on Google, youâll find images of Qutub Minar, the minarets of Masjid Nabawi, Char Minar, Cordoba Minar, and Madyan Minar. You wonât find any resemblance between these minarets and Bangladeshâs Shaheed Minar.
However, if you think this striking similarity with Durga is purely coincidental, then youâve already attained nirvana. Your small brain has been stuffed with Everest-sized conformity by secular intellectuals, so successfully that thereâs no room left for common sense.
Itâs quite natural that no architect would openly admit this. Still, some clues remain. The primary architects of the Shaheed Minar were Hamidur Rahman and Novera Ahmed. Novera Ahmed studied and grew up in Kolkataâs cultural milieu, so the influence of Hindu mythology is very evident in her work. For instance, her sculpture Exterminating Angel, over six feet tall, depicts a woman overpowering a vultureâa symbol of triumph over evil forces and death. Anyone from West or East Bengal can see the resemblance to Goddess Kali in this sculpture.
In a 2022 Voice of America Bangla article, it was stated that Novera drew inspiration for the Shaheed Minarâs design from her Seated Women sculpture. This sculpture portrays a powerful female figureâonce again, a goddess-like representation.
