The Holy Prophet (sa) and Returning Gifts

Hazrat Aisha (ra) narrated that the Holy Prophet (sa) would accept gifts and would also reciprocate them. His practice therefore demonstrated that appreciation should not remain merely verbal where one has the means to return kindness with kindness.

The Holy Prophet (sa) and Gratitude

The Holy Prophet (sa) visited the house of Umm Hani (ra) and asked if she had any food to eat. She felt deeply embarrassed and replied:

"O Messenger of Allah (sa), I have nothing except dry pieces of leftover bread, and I feel ashamed to present that to you."

The Holy Prophet (sa) immediately reassured her, removed her embarrassment, and said:

"Bring it to me."

He took the hard, dry pieces of leftover bread, broke them into pieces, and soaked them in water to make them edible.

He then sprinkled a little salt over the bread and asked if she had anything else to use as a dip or curry. She replied that she had nothing left in the house except vinegar.

The Holy Prophet (sa) poured the vinegar over the bread, ate it, and famously praised it, saying:

"What an excellent condiment vinegar is! A house that has vinegar will never be considered poor (or without food)."

The Holy Prophet (sa) and Gratitude

With relation to the Holy Prophet (sa), Beloved Huzoor (aba) will continue mentioning the gratitude and thankfulness of the Holy Prophet (sa).

Hazrat Aisha (ra) narrates:
"The Messenger of Allah (sa) entered the house and saw a piece of bread that had been thrown on the floor. He picked it up, wiped it, and ate it, and said: 'O Aishah, show honor to the precious (i.e., food), for if the blessing of food departs from people, it never comes back.'"

This was the practice of the Holy Prophet (sa).

The Holy Prophet (sa) and Remembering Every Kindness

Beloved Huzoor (aba) said that one of the outstanding qualities of the Holy Prophet (sa) was that he never forgot even the smallest kindness shown to him. Nor did he consider gratitude fulfilled once he had repaid a favour on a single occasion. Throughout his life, he continued to remember those who had helped him, spoke appreciatively of their goodness, and looked for opportunities to return their kindness in practical ways.

🇧🇬 A Gathering of Knowledge and Excellence

Beloved Huzoor (aba) related the impressions of Solin Penkov, Secretary-General at Bulgaria’s Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, who had previously attended several Jalsas in Germany but found Jalsa Salana UK unparalleled in scale, organisation, and quality. He was astonished by the vast temporary city in which every essential facility had been efficiently provided for more than 50,000 people. He described the speeches as informative, scholarly, and of a high standard, presenting religious and scientific subjects in a manner that increased the audience’s knowledge and understanding. The professionally arranged exhibitions and educational activities for children also impressed him, particularly because they combined modern presentation with the effective training of future generations.

🇧🇿 A Journey Towards Ahmadiyyat

Beloved Huzoor (aba) related the impressions of Mosaic Mariana, a new Ahmadi convert from Belize, who said that she came from a very small country and a town of only about 50,000 people, where even a gathering of one hundred could sometimes lead to disputes. She was therefore overwhelmed by the extraordinary peace, order, and mutual affection displayed by tens of thousands at Jalsa Salana. Her husband had attended the previous year, when Beloved Huzoor (aba) encouraged him to convey the message of Ahmadiyyat to his wife. By the grace of Allah, she was now able to declare with complete conviction, gratitude, and pride that she was an Ahmadi Muslim.

🇸🇻 Lessons for Everyday Life

Beloved Huzoor (aba) related the impressions of Saúl Edgardo, El Salvador’s representative in the Central American Parliament, who said that his first Jalsa Salana UK enabled him to observe the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community closely and taught him important principles for daily life. He was particularly affected by the analogy that just as a branch withers when separated from the tree that sustains it, human beings suffer spiritual death when they become distant from God. He also recognised the truth of Beloved Huzoor’s observation that people often seek God only when difficulties arise. The guidance concerning marriage and lowering the gaze likewise impressed him, as he felt that following these teachings could prevent many problems in married life. Beloved Huzoor (aba) observed that if a non-Ahmadi guest could understand and appreciate this message, Ahmadis themselves must recognise it still more deeply and act upon it.

🇸🇻 A Glimpse of Khilafat’s Care

Beloved Huzoor (aba) further related that Saúl Edgardo of El Salvador was deeply impressed by the extraordinary organisation of Jalsa Salana and by his meeting with Beloved Huzoor (aba). Although he wished the meeting could have lasted longer, he observed that even within the brief time available, Beloved Huzoor (aba) attentively considered every matter and asked him detailed questions. The meeting convinced him that the Khalifa possesses extensive knowledge of the worldwide Jamaat, takes a profound personal interest in its condition, and remains aware of where its members and communities stand.

Huzoor (aa) gave the following guidance:

“It is correct that in the ahadith there is a prohibition regarding women having artificial hair attached to their hair solely for the sake of beautification.

“If these ahadith are considered authentic, then one reason underlying this prohibition is that during the time of the Holy Prophet (sa), sexual immorality was rife among the Jews and centres of vice also existed in Medina. The women involved in such vice would resort to ploys of this kind in order to attain beauty and then attract men towards themselves. For this reason, Allah’s Messenger (sa) expounded upon the abomination of these acts and forbade believing women from engaging in such practices.

“Whilst clarifying the prohibition mentioned in a hadith of this nature, Hazrat Aisha (ra) states that al-wasilah [the woman who attaches hair extensions] does not mean the woman you perceive it to mean. For there is no harm if a woman has very little hair, so thin that the skin of her scalp is visible and she attaches braids of black wool or a plait to her hair. Remember, such a woman is by no means an al-wasilah. In reality, an al-wasilah is one who was a prostitute in her youth and when she grows old, she attaches a plait to her head to work as a procurer. [Because of her old age] no client comes to her. And [if any old client comes to her] both of them [this woman and her client] are introduced to one another due to this immorality.

“Thus, the fundamental principle is that it is not forbidden for a person to adopt any lawful means for their beauty while remaining within the permissible limits. Hence, it is mentioned in a hadith that a person asked, ‘Allah the Almighty has granted me beauty and I too like to remain beautiful and I desire that my clothes be fine and my shoes be fine; does this amount to arrogance?’ Upon this, the Holy Prophet (sa) replied that this was not arrogance and further stated:

“‘Allah is most Beautiful and loves beauty.’

“Similarly, the ahadith mention that when women were married, they too would be prepared, adorned and made beautiful according to the custom of that time.”

Gratitude for Every Volunteer

Every worker who served during Jalsa Salana is deserving of thanks. The MTA and press teams are also due appreciation for carrying out their responsibilities throughout Jalsa, as are the Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya from Canada and Australia who assisted with the operations. The volunteers have a great impact on non-Muslim guests, and many positive impressions are made through their service. Huzoor personally expressed his thanks to all the male and female volunteers for their hard work. We should also thank Allah the Almighty for enabling us to fulfil the responsibilities of Jalsa Salana, and may Allah enable us all to remain humble in this endeavour.

🇺🇸 A Truly Unique Gathering

Beloved Huzoor (aba) related the impressions of Professor Brett Scharffs, a law professor from the United States, who said that although he had attended international conferences and conventions throughout the world, Jalsa Salana UK was entirely unique. He met guests from more than 100 countries, representing different faiths, nationalities, and professions, yet all agreed that its atmosphere of love, respect, peace, and mutual brotherhood was extraordinary. Humanity First and the academic and historical exhibitions also impressed him, particularly the Jamaat’s service to people in need across the world without distinction of religion or nationality. He was equally moved to see highly educated professionals—including doctors, engineers, lawyers, and other specialists—setting aside their status and performing demanding voluntary duties with remarkable humility.

🇧🇷 Impressed by the Spirit of Service

Beloved Huzoor (aba) related the impressions of Brazilian television reporter Eric Portela, who said that he was astonished by the immense scale and breadth of Jalsa Salana. The langar kitchens and the extensive facilities in which food was prepared appeared modern, spacious, exceptionally well organised, and remarkably clean. Observing the care, precision, dedication, and sustained labour of the volunteers was, for him, a beautiful experience that filled his heart with peace and happiness.
