I turned down the chance to see the film with the family and instead I’ve listened to the Iliad and then the Odyssey on the daily commute. I loved Greek Myths and the various films as a teenager but did not tackle these books, I can remember why, probably to much Edgar Rice Burroughs. I’m still reflecting on what Homer is about, rather than what later Greeks say he is about. It’s always good when someone starts to set about some classic or Christian tradition because it prompts me to go to the source. I can now go and watch the film and make a lay man’s evaluation. I assume the racial casting was just marketing sensationalism. And I now have to look into Booth Tarkington as well? I’m into my fourth score and so many books are stacked up in the study, when will I get to read them!
@ronmanagernottm If we wanted to earn extra pocket money we went down the cellar and moved the coke pile to one side so when the delivery came it did not back up.
I watched that Spectator interview and was surprised by some of the candid remarks from the Reform leadership; now we know. But can an aspiring centre-right political party suspend the likes of Tim Montgomerie? Reform needs to be able to contain debates and better manage conflicts among its talent. But we keep saying this, don't we?
In 2026, the world has likely never burned so little
Contrary to climate scare stories
Common but wrong claim #1:
'Decline driven by Africa'
No, all continents are seeing less fire this year

@ronmanagernottm Those were the days, and the official league tables were not drawn up until 6 games had been played, as opposed to the unseemly panic after the first game.
Ultra Lefty Labour MP Rachel Maskell has repeatedly attacked Shabana Mahmood's migration crackdown.
Then comes the news that 1200 illegals are to be housed in her constituency at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.
Guess what?🤔
She goes beserk and demands that it doesn't happen, saying that men will outnumber the women in the area by 6 to 1.
Not in my backyard, eh Rachel, you complete and utter hypocrite?
Isn’t the real point that the voters of Clacton knowing the accusations just endorsed him with more votes that last time. Any Tory MP in the vicinity needs to start planning a career change.
Nigel Farage is back as an MP after his victory over 33 nobodies’ as he described them in the election he called in Clacton. Expect a damning parliamentary report in Sept into his finances followed by a suspension from the HoC, a recall petition & probable second by election
Leaving aside the fact that restore will only win a seat or two if they are lucky. I’m not opposed in principle to their plans but the practical application, ie the detail of what cuts and where, is completely missing. The government has contracts with wind and solar companies that will have huge fees for cancelling contracts. Any meaningful reform of the NHS will take years to see a real savings, demographics of an ageing population and low native fertility will burden the NHS and pensions and welfare, deporting illegal migrants and criminals makes sense but will cost money to beef up border force, increase court time and entice countries of origin to cooperate. Reforming/scrapping the home office will cost money in redundancies, I won’t go on. I think a crash course Milei fashion is unrealistic. Any genuine potential Government will need priorities and a credible plan. Just look what happened to Truss and Kwarteng. There is also a strategic problem here. Without a serious plan no one will believe you but if you actually reveal a serious plan your political opponents will attack any and every weakness real or imaginary and in particular Whitehall would be able to work out how to stop you.
Restore Britain's costed plan for income tax is to raise the personal allowance to £16,000, extend the basic-rate band to £100,000 and restore the full allowance to ALL taxpayers.
Crucially, this will be implemented AFTER necessary cuts are delivered.
Our plan will not only give hardworking British men and women a huge financial boost, it will get inflation under control.
VAT will be brought down to 18%.
Along with abolishing stamp duty and inheritance tax, with vast swathes of stealth taxes being eradicated.
That means more money in a more affordable economy.
In addition, Restore Britain will abolish corporation tax on the first £50,000 of profits for all companies. With profits over £50,000 we propose an immediate restoration of the 19% rate, with an aspiration to reduce this to 15% as soon as fiscal conditions allow.
The economy will boom.
We have proposed exactly how we will fund this.
Cuts to welfare, funding for foreign nationals, quangos, net zero spend, freezing departmental budgets, NHS reform and more.
This is a properly considered policy document.
It's boring, tedious work - but this is exactly what we need to prepare. It's what Britain needs. Not nonsense slogans. An actual plan.
A Restore Britain Government will make life affordable again for hardworking British men and women.
In the 11 years between Ed Miliband's Climate Change Act and Theresa May's net zero, Britain cut its CO2 by 180 m tonnes while the Rest of the World increased theirs by 5 bn tonnes, erasing Britain's reductions on average every 140 days ...
My oped in today's WSJ:
Despite what you’ve heard, the world isn’t on fire
Contrary to recent fire coverage’s apocalyptic tone, the globe is on trend for record-low burned area

The number of recorded rapes in the UK has gone from <8000 in 2000 to ~75,000 today. So ~10x. Ten times
Rape offences per capita also up manifold
What you don't learn from these numbers of the brutality of the rapes. EG gang rape today a much more frequent occurrence.
This to me is a major emergency that requires both politicians and the police to step up.
I know these were easy wins but on a scale of importance to people's lives it obliterates £2 bus fares, fake discounts and subscription traps.
