It’s something you see every day but probably don’t think about much, except when there’s a pothole.

Asphalt is made from crushed rock, sand, and other aggregates with a binding material, generally bitumen or asphalt concrete, derived from petroleum. The first asphalt streets in #Potsdam were laid in the 1910s, with the first being Market St in 1911. By the 1940s, all the village streets were paved with asphalt as the use of automobiles grew. The Potsdam-Canton Road was first paved in 1910 under contract from the state as part of a wider project for a paved route across the North Country. After a century of paving, there are very few roads left not covered in asphalt.
