I also don't get this bad faith approach to music and art. When self titled came out, that was a significant moment but I didn't necessarily like the album. For the longest time, All Night was the only song I liked on Lemonade. The album grew on me.

Clint, Kim and Lesley-Ann can never identify as black despite being coloured. Others can because their African ancestry is prominent.

Might be controversial but funny enough, majority Coloured people have African DNA in them and a large portion have it as a majority of their DNA.

Granted it differs by province and the mixture differs as well but it's honestly not incorrect in a sense for many Coloured people to identify as Black racially and Coloured as a culture. But SAns do not like using the one drop rule of course it's never been part of our history, however, Coloured people should never forget that Africans were their foundation and because the ethnic group was born in an African country, Africans were always going to contribute the most to their DNA.

South African groups contributed the most to their DNA. Looking at regions with substantial coloured populations:
WC = Xhosa, Tswana, Sotho and Khwe
EC = Khwe and Xhosa (mostly)
FS = Khwe, Sotho and Tswana
NC = Khwe, Sotho, Tswana and Xhosa
Gauteng = Mixed-ethnic
KZN = Zulu (their Khwe contribution mostly comes from their Zulu ancestors)

West/Central Africans and East Africans also had some contribution but not as much as South Africans. But there's just been too much mixture to really box them in and Coloured identity provides a safer alternative to just Black.

I don't understand carrying on like different artists can't have songs with the same name. I'll just assume that people are fishing for another reason to dislike Tyla because this one doesn't make sense to me.

Meanwhile both songs are completely different and each song is unique to each individual artist. Musicians will have different songs with the same name. The existence of another doesn't invalid or even overshadow the other.

On one hand you have Benni McCarthy. Then you have Tyla and Lesley-Ann Brandt who plays Mazikeen on the show Lucifer, then you have Kim Engelbrecht and Clint Brink. When you look at these people, they can never be classified as one race. They do however share a culture.

Not all mixed people are coloured. That being the BA takeaway is quite something else. Someone like Trevor is mixed race but is often mistaken for coloured while he is not.

The most frustrating part of this chat about Tyla’s racial identity is that there are commonalities between the production of racial/ethnic categories as a result apartheid and slavery, and recognising that would be way more productive than whatever the hell Americans are doing
