The term "microwave" is due to the wavelength of these photons, of about 1.9 mm. Background refers to the fact that such radiation is all over the space. Wherever your radiotelescope is pointing, you will detect it.

The photons arriving to our eyes from the Microwave Background Radiation (MBR) are not from the origin of the Universe, as sometimes is said, but they are the oldest photons we can detect from the Universe. All the other photons we see are originated later.

However, some of them show a cuasi-elliptical form at the IR (old stellar population). Some other irregular galaxies might have this lack of shape due to interactions with some other galaxies. In this case thy might show some disturbance like tails. Or not.

When a galaxy is not elliptical or spiral is called irregular. The name came from E. Hubble himself at the beginning of the XX century. Such galaxies have no a clear form in the bluest band of the optical spectrum.
