The C-17 sqn is based at Amberley, the P-8 positioned from its home base at RAAF Base Edinburgh yesterday. From yesterday's presser the C-17 has supplies the P-8 will conduct recon of the volcano.

@Opposing_Bases OB155: the balloon BS saw on Foreflight likely from Google's project Loon. All transponder/ADSB equipped and generally operate F600+ (so in class G). But sometimes they need to come down for the correct winds to navigate so need the gear.

@jackhodgson @burnsidej @RealHigdon Re:conspicuity; RAAF 79SQN (BAe Hawk lead in jet training) changed scheme some years ago from "low observable grey" you see on military jets to someone a little more "observable". Rumour says it was after a few student close calls.
