Why does the deconstruction of the Last Supper in the opening ceremonies matter?

Why should Christians care?

Because of this.

The name of the opening ceremony sequence was ‘La Cène sur la scène sur la Seine’ - which as @PageauJonathan pointed out yesterday, is a pun that reads plainly as a reference to the Last Supper. (Translating roughly as 'The Last Supper on the stage on the River Seine'.) The performers acknowledged this at the time, and I can only assume people are denying and backing away from it to avoid the backlash.

Dionysus was there because (again, credit to Pageau’s analysis) the scene was an invocation of Carnival — the contrast between the impulses of order and chaos, piety and indulgence. And the drama of the scene unfolded with the triumph of Bacchanalian chaos — including orgiastic dancing, the inversion of gender, the inclusion (centrality event of a young girl in the final act of the scene. Bacchus was the Paschal Lamb. A celebration of deconstruction.

Wrong. Because the revaluation of values dramatized in the opening ceremonies has real-world consequences. In this case, today, a biological male breaks a female athlete’s nose in competition and is rewarded for it by advancing to the next round. Think about it. In the name of sport, we’re rewarding violence by men against women. We’re setting a standard that will almost surely, in many categories, crows biological women out of the games.

It’s not just about blasphemy and respecting sacred symbols. It’s about culture and civilization and norms that safeguard women and children.
