By day, she’s saving lives in the operating theatre. By night, she’s solving physics problems.
Meet Dr Komal Om Gupta, a surgeon who teamed up with engineers at IIT Delhi to build a simple 3D-printed attachment that clips onto a smartphone camera and helps doctors check, during surgery itself, whether the entire tumour has been removed.
No bulky machines. No unaffordable technology. Just a smart, low-cost solution built for Indian hospitals and real-world constraints.
During her MS in General Surgery at AIIMS Delhi, her days were split between patients and prototypes. From hospital wards to engineering labs.
Relearning optical physics. Testing. Improving. Repeating. Living two professional lives with one clear mission: make breast cancer care more accessible.
The device was validated during live surgeries, earned recognition at national and international conferences, led to publications and an international travelling fellowship, and later received support from the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, for further development.
What began as a student thesis is now a step towards faster, safer cancer surgeries for thousands of women.
Because innovation matters most when it reaches the people who need it the most.
