Atom: Sawadi ka, I’m Atom Pariya.

Reporter: What are you here to do today?

Faye: We’re here to rehearse Thai classical dance (รำไทย) today.

Atom: Yes.

Faye: It’s for a Lakhon Nai (ละครใน) performance of Inao.

Atom: P’Faye will play Inao, while I’ll play Busaba.

Reporter: How has it been so far?

Faye: It’s such an honor. We even have a National Artist teaching and rehearsing with us personally. Thank you to Y EN and P’Kong for giving us this opportunity.

Faye: The dance rehearsals are difficult. When you see how graceful the movements look, you wouldn’t know that everything is actually so tense! Even my mouth gets tense. It’s not just the hands, even my mouth! It’s pretty difficult.

Atom: It really is difficult, but it’s also so much fun. Today, I got to revisit Thai classical dance again.

Faye: For me, the last time was when I was in Grade 9. What about you?

Atom: Mine was sometime in junior high school too. So today was a chance to refresh those skills. Our goal is simply to give it everything we’ve got.

Faye: As for our dance scores, we’ll have to let everyone else decide. (laughs)

Atom: Please give me a score! And make it a good one! (laughs)

Reporter: Atom, you normally love dancing. What’s it like switching from your usual dance style to Thai classical dance?

Atom: Wow, the contrast is huge! I used to dance hip-hop, which is all about fast movements. But now I have to completely switch gears and be graceful, calm, and slow.

I keep telling myself, "Focus... slow down... stay calm."

It’s a completely different side of dance and something very new for me.

Faye: This will be the first time our fans get to see us perform Thai classical dance in full traditional costumes and regalia. We’re going all out for Y EN.

Atom: It’s going to be very special!

Reporter: With only two days left, what percentage would you say you’re ready?

Faye: I’d say we’re at about 80% now. We still have two days, so we’ll add another 10% each day.

Atom: Don’t do the math! (laughs)

Reporter: What are your expectations?

Faye & Atom: No expectations, so there’ll be no disappointment! (laughs) We’re just going to do our absolute best.

Faye: I only just realized how difficult Thai classical dance actually is. I don’t remember it being this hard when I learned it at school!

Atom: Exactly! I feel like I’m dancing with my brain. (laughs)

Faye: We’re bringing T-Pop into Thai classical dance!

Atom: But every movement is graceful and beautiful, and every gesture has a meaning.

Faye: That’s what makes it so interesting. Thai literature, the meanings behind it, even the gestures themselves. Every movement communicates something. I only really learned that today from coming here to practice.

Our Thai culture is truly beautiful.

Lakhon Nai (ละครใน) is a highly refined form of traditional Thai dance-drama. Historically, it was performed exclusively within the royal court or palace.

One of its distinctive traditions was its all-female cast. The performers were originally women of the royal court who underwent rigorous, detailed training in classical Thai dance.
