"When government deliberately makes ordinary life more awkward in order to nudge citizens toward a desired social or environmental outcome, it misreads human nature at a fundamental level.
People do not become more thoughtful custodians of the planet when their days are consumed by the small humiliations of overflowing bins.
Consciousness of the longer term requires a measure of security in the present. When living conditions are eased and costs lowered, people begin to recycle more thoughtfully, waste less, and make better choices precisely because they are no longer pinned down by the urgent necessities of the day ahead."

A Christian child should not create an image of the nativity, because it may upset a muslim child (or more relevantly that child's parents).
These guidelines came in under a Conservative Goverrnment.
Reform Councils must reject this.

📢 SAY NO TO 3 WEEKLY BIN COLLECTIONS: PETITION IS NOW LIVE
https://t.co/ndZ7mPd0rj
People who already have gardens for composting, sort their waste, or have room for extra bins show that environmental stewardship is possible when basic conditions are met. The real key to getting society to care better for the planet isn't more financial pressure—it's reducing everyday economic stresses so people have the mental and practical space to act responsibly. That's the simple principle driving this campaign.
This Lib Dem administration has bowed to public pressure before. Let's do it again.
If enough of us stand together and Say No to 3-Weekly Bins, we WILL overturn their decision. We can do it!

Any refugees from Iran should be housed in the Middle East, not Britain.
We cannot and should not take any more. Any who arrive illegally will be deported under a Reform UK government.
An impressive result for @reformparty_uk today. We more than doubled our vote and beat Labour in their own backyard. Huge credit to @GoodwinMJ and the thousands of volunteers.
The wider campaign, however, should be a wake up call.
South Asian men instructing women how to vote at polling stations in modern Britain.
The winning party campaigning under a foreign flag and in foreign languages to exploit a foreign conflict.
Depresssingly I can only see this appalling level of sectarianism spreading because most of our political class are in denial.
Britain is broken. But it can be set on a better course. That’s why everyone who shares these concerns needs to get behind Reform and ensure the fight back can begin.
Today the Liberal Democrats passed a budget that will mean residents pay more and get less. It includes plans to:
• move waste collections from 2-weekly to 3-weekly
• introduce Sunday parking charges
• introduce evening parking charges
• borrow more, pushing debt onto future generations
• give away strategic assets
• bring in an inconvenient booking system for household recycling centres
• reject sensible pick-up points for SEND transport, increasing costs
• set out a three-year financial plan that doesn’t balance, storing up bigger problems for later
Reform UK voted against this. We’ll keep fighting tooth and nail for common sense and for the people of Wiltshire - and we will oppose this appalling waste of your money at every step.
I am the only candidate who will put Gorton and Denton first
I will speak for you, I will fight for you
You will not be ignored any longer
Vote Reform, Get Starmer Out.
We’re challenging the Lib Dem budget in Wiltshire.
Two simple amendments from Reform UK:
✅ Stop the move from 2-weekly to 3-weekly bin collections
✅ Save money by scrapping the Green Tariff waste
We’re the party of common sense. Protecting residents’ pockets, and focusing on the services people actually want. Not box-ticking.
And we’re working hard to stop the Lib Dems from:
> Implementing huge parking charge increases
> Introducing Sunday parking charges
> Extending evening parking charges
> Closing HRCs (they’ve already U-turned under pressure)
> Cutting Parish Stewards (they’ve already U-turned under pressure)
> Introducing an inconvenient online booking system for HRCs
> Giving away St Stephen's Place Car Park alongside £2.5m
SCHOOL FINES: A record 2,833 parents in Wiltshire have been fined for daring to take their children on a family holiday during term time in 2024/25.
I think this is evidence that this system is not working.
I firmly believe parents know what's best for their own children, not some faceless bureaucrat. A well-planned family break, learning about new cultures and building family bonds can be far more educational than sitting in a classroom for another week: creating memories that last a lifetime.
Childhood is short – why on earth are we punishing hardworking families for wanting to spend quality time together? Regular attendance matters, of course, but a few days off for a holiday isn't truancy or neglect.
I believe parents should have the right to a limited number of authorised term-time absence days without fines for responsible choices.
What do you think? Should parents be free to take their children out for a family holiday without the threat of a fine?
🚨 Wiltshire Council Leader and Calne Town Mayor Cllr Ian Thorn used privileged insider information about a last-minute deal with Hills Waste Solutions to announce a U-turn on closing the Purton and Lower Compton recycling centres – before informing his fellow Wiltshire councillors or allowing proper scrutiny.
This announcement came on the very evening he was defending himself against a no-confidence motion as town mayor, accused of failing to represent Calne residents on this critical local issue. Thorn himself later admitted it "may well have been" a mistake to share the news prematurely, yet the timing raises serious questions: Was confidential council negotiation details deployed as a personal political shield to sway the vote?
The Lib Dems have demonstrated time and again why they can no longer be trusted with our council. It's time for real change: accountability, democracy, and putting Calne first.
Under President Trump’s leadership, common sense, scientific integrity, and accountability have been restored to federal food and health policy.
For decades, the Dietary Guidelines favored corporate interests over common-sense, science-driven advice to improve the health of Americans.
That ends today.
The new Dietary Guidelines call for prioritizing high-quality protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—and avoiding highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates.
“It is not hard to imagine circumstances in which the officers in question might be called on to deal with a clash between gender-critical people and supporters of gender ideology, and therefore situations where the former had cause for concern as to whether they were being dealt with impartially.”

So UK unemployment hits 5%.
This is what happens when student politicians who have never made important decisions before and have no idea how incentives work make the most important decisions in the land.
Making it more expensive (NI hike) and risky (“workers rights”) to employ people results in fewer people employed.
Now watch what happens to rent…
Today Nine four star generals accused Starmer of undermining the British Army through the broadening interpretation of Human Rights legislation.
It is time for us to leave the ECHR.
One of the most damning articles I’ve ever read. 👇
The government is weaponising the ECHR and international treaties to prosecute veterans for split-second decisions made in combat decades ago, decisions that were lawful at the time.
These soldiers fought for Britain and now Britain fights them. An unforgivable betrayal.
Generals say trust in the system has collapsed and that collapse is a direct threat to national security.
Our troops literally risked everything for Britain, and now our government risks everything to go after them.
Seriously, who needs enemies abroad
when the real danger is a government so obsessed with international approval and so far removed from its duty to keep us safe, that it fails on every front, our borders, our streets, our energy, even our veterans.
A treacherous government that protects everyone and everything except the people it was elected to serve. @thetimes
