As expected, this negatively impacted the existence of textile and ginneries, as cotton, the main raw material, has been in short supply. Consequently, an industry that provides employment and income for many, including farmers and numerous workers along the cotton value chain, has become dormant. The impact on security, unemployment, and poverty is disastrous.

A chain reaction ensues. Cotton production drops considerably, adversely affecting textile and ginning companies in Zamfara state and ultimately impacting the socio-economic lives of many citizens.

Why does a state that once had 15 cotton ginneries, each employing no fewer than 200 people, now have fewer than five? Why did the state allow Zamfara Textile Limited (ZTL), which was officially commissioned in 1965 by Sir Ahmadu Bello and employed about 3,000 workers, to fall into a decline, resulting in its shutdown in 2004?

Why has this sector, which provided employment and income for many families, become so moribund? What actions is the government taking to revive this vital industry?

To address this crucial challenge, the government and other key stakeholders must identify and tackle the underlying causes. What roles do insecurity, the lack of quality seeds, and the widespread importation of textile materials play in all of this? Can farmers be assured of good seeds that will produce high yields? Will the government summon the necessary courage to confront the importation of textile materials?

GOV. LAWAL SIGNS HISTORIC EDUCATION REFORM ORDERS, DISTRIBUTES NATIONAL CURRICULUM TO ZAMFARA SCHOOLS

Governor Dauda Lawal has signed Executive Orders to establish an integrated governance framework for education financing, school protection, classification, quality assurance, health, and security.

The governor on Tuesday also launched the distribution of national curricula to public schools during a meeting with education stakeholders at the Government House in Gusau.

A statement by the governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that the reforms address school governance and operations, school feeding and student welfare, transportation safety, safe schools' implementation, and regulation of graduation ceremonies.

He added that further reforms include unified examinations, school health services, merit-based school leadership appointments, inclusive education, and the promotion of STEM, TVET, and digital education.

In his remarks, Governor Lawal said education is far more than a social service.

He said, "It is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, stimulating economic growth, and preparing future generations to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world.

"Today, we are turning that commitment into concrete institutional reforms by signing and presenting these Executive Orders.

"These Executive Orders are not isolated directives. Together, they constitute a comprehensive governance framework designed to strengthen school administration, improve accountability, protect public educational assets, enhance financing, promote safety, raise educational standards, improve learning outcomes, and prepare our children for the demands of the twenty-first century."

Governor Lawal emphasised that, for many years, education reforms focused primarily on physical infrastructure. While classrooms, laboratories, and learning facilities are important, experience shows that buildings alone do not guarantee quality education.

Earlier, Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, said that successful education systems depend on collaboration among governments, teachers, parents, communities, traditional institutions, development partners, and the private sector.

"These reforms will not end with policy documents. They will be reflected in safer schools, stronger governance, healthier learners, improved teaching, better educational outcomes and greater public confidence in our education system."

Governor Dauda Lawal reiterated that development comes when resources are managed efficiently and transparently, and the government provides an enabling environment for investors to operate responsibly.

The governor on Saturday unveiled the Zamfara Lithium Mining and Processing Plant in Boko Village, Zurmi Local Government Area.

The 200-million-dollar Zamfara Lithium Mining and Processing Plant is a joint investment by ZAM Mining Company Ltd, Bima Mines Ltd, Jinlide Mining Co. Ltd, and other partners.

In his remarks, Governor Lawal described the unveiling as a new beginning to unlock Zamfara State's potential through responsible investment, industrial growth, job creation, and the sustainable use of mineral resources, with the people at the centre.

He said, "For many years, our State has been known within and outside this country as a haven of vast mineral deposits. Our land is blessed with abundant resources; the measure of this blessing is how it is responsibly harnessed to improve the lives of our people.

"From the inception of this administration, we made a firm commitment to change the narrative of the solid minerals sector in Zamfara State from informality to organisation, from exploitation to value creation, and from lost opportunities to shared prosperity.

"This is why our administration has continued to support reforms promoting lawful mining activities, attracting credible investors, and strengthening partnerships with the Federal Government to ensure mining activities contribute meaningfully to economic growth and development.

"The global economy is changing rapidly. Lithium and other critical minerals are central to the future of renewable energy, electric vehicles, modern technology, and industrial transformation. Zamfara State cannot afford to remain only a source of raw minerals; we must become active participants in the entire value chain.

"The establishment of this processing plant is consistent with our vision to move beyond extraction towards local processing, value addition, skills development, and industrial growth.

"Let me assure all genuine investors that Zamfara State Government will continue to provide the enabling environment to succeed. We will strengthen security collaboration, improve infrastructure, and develop policies that promote sustainable development.

STATE POLICE WILL GIVE GOVERNORS GENUINE AUTHORITY AS CHIEF SECURITY OFFICERS TO COMBAT INSECURITY -GOVERNOR LAWAL

Governor Dauda Lawal said state police will go a long way toward tackling insecurity in the country by giving governors real authority as chief security officers of their states.

He made these remarks as a panellist at the Arise News Town Hall Summit: Building a National Consensus for State Police & National Security, held today at the Thisday Dome in Abuja.

Governor Lawal observed that insecurity has persisted in the states because the command and control structure has not been under the chief executives of the states.

He said that when state governments are responsible for the security of lives and property within their domains, the police would be better equipped and have more personnel to tackle crime.

"We're being called chief security officers of our respective states; however, the command and control structure is not under the governors,” he said.

“I am happy with the recent development of state police because it allows us to keep to our responsibilities and for our people also to hold us accountable as far as the security situation is concerned in our respective states,” the governor said.

The governor further said that, “I strongly believe that, by the time we have state police, it will go a long way in solving a lot of the challenges, and we can then bear our names as proper chief security officers of our respective states."

While dismissing claims of abuse by state executives, the governor noted that almost all states of the federation have one or more security apparatuses in place, and none of these security outfits has been used to oppress opposition in the states.

He, however, urged the lawmakers to put measures in place to prevent abuse.

“I support state police. I recognise people’s fears of possible abuse, but with the right processes in place, those fears will be allayed,” he said.

The summit aimed to build consensus on state police and broader national security reforms, as concerns over insecurity continue to dominate public discourse across Nigeria.

It brought together national security leaders, governors, lawmakers, civil society organisations, policy experts, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to secure communities and protect lives across the country.

Sexual Harassment: MAAUN Disowns Dr. Gwadabe, Says His Affiliation with the University Ended Last May

Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), on Thursday evening distanced itself from Dr. Nasa’i Gwadabe amid reports linking him to sexual harassment allegations.

In a statement signed by the university’s Registrar, Habibu Awaisu, the management said Dr. Gwadabe’s one-year appointment as a Visiting Lecturer ended in May 2026 and was not renewed.

“The Management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria wishes to clarify recent reports circulating on social media regarding Dr. Nasa’i Gwadabe. His one-year appointment ended in May 2026 and was not renewed. He is therefore no longer affiliated with MAAUN,” the statement said.

The university explained that Visiting Lecturers are engaged on one-year contracts, with renewal subject to satisfactory performance, institutional needs and management approval, adding that Dr. Gwadabe’s appointment expired alongside those of several other visiting lecturers.

MAAUN also reaffirmed its “zero tolerance” policy on sexual harassment, abuse and exploitation, noting that its Founder has instituted a ₦5 million reward for any female student who reports and provides credible evidence of sexual harassment or assault by any lecturer or staff member through the appropriate channels.

The management further dismissed claims circulating online that a student was delayed for two years or that a postgraduate student was among the alleged victims, describing both assertions as inaccurate. It noted that the university only recently graduated its first set of students and is yet to commence postgraduate programmes.

The university urged the public and media organisations to report the matter accurately and refrain from describing Dr. Gwadabe as a current member of its staff, insisting that his affiliation with the institution ended in May 2026.

State Police: Zamfara Is Already Bearing The Cost

The Nigerian Senate has recently passed a Bill establishing both the Federal and State Police. The realities that necessitated this landmark constitutional amendment are too glaring to ignore.

Over the years, Nigeria has faced multidimensional security challenges: separatist violence in the Southeast, insurgency in the Northeast, communal clashes in the North Central, cultism and armed robbery in the Southwest, militancy and vandalism in the South-South, and the devastating banditry and kidnapping in the Northwest.

The threats are varied, entrenched, and nationwide. The hard reality is that nowhere is safe in Nigeria today, and no one is spared. Even areas once considered relatively secure are no longer insulated. The menace spreads rapidly and respects no boundaries.

These growing challenges seem to have outpaced federal response capacity, leaving many communities helplessly exposed and grossly under-policed across the country.

The post-debate surrounding the passage of the State Police Bill has been intense. Some see it as a game changer, while others remain skeptical. Most critics argue that state governments lack the financial and institutional capacity to run State Police. A second fear is that the police could become instruments of political oppression in the hands of governors.

These concerns are, to some extent, genuine and fair. However, I will say without mincing words that Zamfara is the clearest case for why State Police should not be further delayed on that account. The current leadership in the state has demonstrated sufficient political will and can serve as a model for what subnationals are capable of doing.

Under Governor Dauda Lawal, Zamfara State has undertaken critical security reforms that strengthen institutional capacity and integrity in security management. The state has also been bankrolling all security formations with operational vehicles, logistics, and other essential assets.

Out of foresight, Governor Lawal established the State Security Trust Fund to mobilize resources for anti-banditry operations. To date, the State, through the Fund, has procured over 200 vehicles, including about 30 armoured personnel carriers, and over 100 motorcycles. All of these assets have been deployed to security agencies across the state.

Beyond equipment, the state government has been providing fuel and other operational logistics to all security agencies. It has also reconstructed several police stations and police quarters and procured advanced surveillance drones to strengthen intelligence gathering.

To complement conventional forces, the state established a local security outfit, the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards, known as “Askarawa.” The outfit has recruited over 2,000 locals. In addition, hunters from Maiduguri with extensive counter-terrorism experience have been engaged to form a hybrid security force. The state is hundred percent funding their capital and recurrent expenses.

It is therefore not out of place to say that Zamfara is already bearing the cost of security, even without constitutional control over the Police or other federal security agencies. Creating State Police will therefore not be an additional burden on the state, but merely a formalization of an existing responsibility.

It is my firm belief that our security challenges are local and therefore require local solutions. As Governor Lawal often says: “Nobody will come and fix them for us. We will do it ourselves.”

Now imagine the Askarawa constitutionally backed as State Police, with more sophisticated training, a better arsenal, and a closer chain of command. They already possess superior knowledge of the terrain compared to federal officers who might be posted to the state. More importantly, the motivation of fighting for your own communities is incomparable.

Governor Dauda Lawal has provided 50 new buses to the Zamfara State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

The buses were officially handed over to recipients on Wednesday at the Government House in Gusau.

A statement by the governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, disclosed that the Zamfara State Government provided the 50 buses to the NURTW as a loan under the Zamfara State Loan Scheme.

The statement added that part of the critical assets distributed includes five fire trucks procured to support effective firefighting.

In his remarks, Governor Lawal reiterated that the loan scheme is part of his administration's efforts to improve the public transportation system, promote economic empowerment, and enhance the safety and efficiency of transportation for our people.

He said, “The buses would be distributed to the NURTW on loan, under the Zamfara State Loan Scheme. The Union has agreed to participate in the identification, supervision, and repayment of its members' vehicles.

“Under this scheme, the vehicles were procured at the cost of N27,390,000.00 only. However, the Government will provide a 20% subsidy on the total cost of each vehicle.

“This represents the sum of N5,478,000.00 per vehicle. Therefore, each beneficiary will pay N21,912,000.00 per vehicle within 44 months of vehicle allocation.

“We are also commissioning 5 units of fire trucks procured for an effective firefighting mechanism.

“We are aware that fire outbreaks can destroy homes, shops, and livelihoods in seconds. These new fire trucks, equipped with modern standards, will strengthen the state fire service's capacity to respond faster across all nooks and crannies of the State.

“I, therefore, charge the Fire Service to complement these efforts by ensuring adequate training of its personnel, conducting public fire-safety sensitisations, and always keeping the equipment in serviceable condition.”

The Governor further emphasised that the assets distributed belong to the people of Zamfara State.

“I direct all MDAs and beneficiaries to submit quarterly maintenance and utilisation reports to their respective reporting Offices. I want to emphasise that vandalism, misuse, or diversion will not be tolerated.”
