Joe O’Cearuill, father of Manchester United’s 15-year-old academy star JJ Gabriel, has admitted he wants his son to leave Old Trafford, believing the teenager’s long-term future lies at a club he views as more progressive.

The former Republic of Ireland defender, who has been central to his son’s career decisions, is understood to feel United are not moving quickly enough with first-team opportunities.

Gabriel, widely regarded as one of England’s outstanding talents of his age, handed in a formal request to be de-registered this week, stunning the club. United have rejected the demand and say there is time to repair the relationship before his current deal expires next summer.
