The recent lettuce-poop outbreak is one of the reasons I am pushing for the California avocado. The imported avocado product may be cheaper, but it's typically grown in conditions that can be questionable - with local produce, there is much better oversight.

Yes please and the California Avocado commission is a huge part of the problem. I grow 12 acres still in what was the avocado capital, Fallbrook. My break even is $1.50 a pound. We are averaging $1.08 this year. If you ever want the truth about it all and how the commission is the problem let me know. Remember all your asparagus used to come from California too (you might be too young to remember that 😁). At least the asparagus commission is gone.

@ChefGruel The only reason the Ventura farmers are upset is Peru. The largest packing houses have a vested interest in Peruvian fruit. This story masks that fact. CA fruit is the best but I understand the need for a year round market.
