Sengoku Basara is an Historical Action Fantasy series Developed by Capcom & created by Hiroyuki Kobayashi in 2005.
It's a Musou series similar to Dynasty Warriors. However entirely its own soul & spirit. It takes all the anime tropes we love fusing them with legendary Japanese historical figures to create larger than life personalities.
The 1st Game was mild gameplay wise but it's intense style oozed off the screen & left everyone wanting more. Casting legendary Seiyuu & creating timeless designs. This lead to sequels & expansions that would refine the gameplay to a masterful level.
In conjunction with the success of the games an anime simultaneously launched during the release of the 2nd entry. This anime by Production I.G. was also a hit. Lasting Two seasons & a Movie. As well as two more animes. Judge End & Gakuen. All of which loving and artistically capture the series spirit. Not just anime, Basara became a cultural sensation at the time. Various stage plays, a live drama TV series, figures, merchandise, even an Arcsys Fighting game. It was everywhere.
As Basara's hype grew it gave way to others that similarly would bring historical figures to life with extreme personalities. FATE is the biggest example that comes to mind but there are many more.
Despite its vehement success in Japan it only saw two localization attempts. In 2005 as a badly re-imagined Devil Kings & in 2010 as the rightful Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes!
This 2nd attempt had passion & effort. Casting iconic voice actors for its English Dub. Releasing the anime with a dub. And although the game sales didn't meet Capcom's expectations, the anime was a smash hit. And we got every series localized up to Judge End.
Basara came to an end with Sanada Yukimura-Den in 2016. Which is a game I have mixed feelings of. It's a series that fuses Capcom's fighting game/action development experience to give birth to something you can endlessly dive into.
I was introduced to the series in the 2000s thanks to the Anime. Which opened the gateway of love that exists now.
Still waiting after all these years to hear Roronoa Zoro shout ARE YOU READY GUYS?
What's grips me the most of this series isn't the crazy battles. It's the deep stories and relationships of these warriors. Especially in the games there is a lot of story to immerse yourself into. It really was something that deepened my affection for Japanese History & culture. I'll love this forever. In the hardest of times this fantasy gave me strength. My favorite is Katakura Kojuro the Right Eye of the Dragon ⚡️🐉.
I'll keep waiting for you Basara‼️
