🇲🇽 En 2017, México conoció a Frida. Aquella labrador de la Marina que, con sus goggles y botines, se convirtió en el símbolo de la esperanza entre los escombros del 19 de septiembre.

🇻🇪 Hoy, el mundo vuelve a conmoverse con otro héroe de cuatro patas: Tsunami, el perro rescatista que ha ayudado a localizar sobrevivientes tras los devastadores terremotos en Venezuela.

Cada tragedia nos deja una imagen inolvidable. Y casi siempre esa imagen tiene cuatro patas.

Pero... ¿alguna vez nos hemos detenido a pensar en la realidad detrás de un perro rescatista?

Un perro rescatista puede pasar horas caminando sobre concreto roto, varillas, vidrio, polvo, calor extremo y estructuras que pueden colapsar. Sus patas se lastiman, sus músculos se fatigan y sus articulaciones resienten años de trabajo.

Y aquí viene algo que pocos saben.

Ellos no entienden que buscan víctimas de un terremoto. Para ellos es un juego: Sí, un juego, encontrar a una persona significa recibir su juguete favorito o el reconocimiento de su guía.

Y aquí viene el problema: Cuando pasan horas o incluso días sin encontrar sobrevivientes, dejan de recibir esa recompensa. Por eso, durante operaciones prolongadas, muchos equipos esconden deliberadamente a un rescatista para que el perro lo encuentre y conserve la motivación. No es un engaño; es una técnica para cuidar el estado emocional de estos heroicos canes.

Pero ellos, como cualquier animal, también se cansan. También sufren estrés. También envejecen.

Después de años de servicio llega una jubilación que casi nadie recuerda o su muerte, mientras el público ya piensa en el siguiente "perro héroe".

Y aunque muchos creen que son infalibles, no lo son. El viento, el fuego, el polvo, los gases o la profundidad de una víctima pueden impedirles detectar un olor. Por eso siempre trabajan junto con manejadores, bomberos, ingenieros, médicos y especialistas.

No escribo esto para restarles mérito. Todo lo contrario.

Lo escribo porque detrás de cada perro rescatista hay un ser vivo que siente cansancio, dolor y estrés, y que ha dedicado su vida a salvar personas.

Quizá el mejor homenaje no sea solo llamarlo héroe, sino garantizarle las mejores condiciones de entrenamiento, protección, atención veterinaria y un retiro digno.

Y aquí va una pregunta que vale la pena debatir:

¿Hasta qué punto el enorme esfuerzo físico y emocional que les exigimos para salvar vidas podría acercarse al límite del bienestar animal? ¿Dónde termina el heroísmo y dónde empieza una exigencia que podría considerarse excesiva? Yo amo a los animales, en casa tengo tres adorables perros, y soy el primero en admirar su labor, pero también pensar en que estén bien y seguros.
