First known US case: American charged for using a “duress” password

Samuel Tunick, an Atlanta resident, is being prosecuted for allegedly giving border agents a passcode that wiped his phone.

The feature comes from GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused Android OS. Entering the duress code triggers a full factory reset.

This is believed to be the first time federal prosecutors have brought such charges.

The incident happened in January 2025 at Atlanta airport. Agents demanded access to his phone without a warrant, saying he hadn’t yet officially entered the US. When they entered the code, the phone wiped itself.

Tunick has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers argue the seizure was unlawful and that agents were investigating his activism against “Cop City.”

The case raises big questions about digital rights at the US border.

On the morning of September 19, 1961, 53 people were inside the YWCA in downtown Terre Haute, Indiana. Most had no idea that an explosive device had been placed near the building’s boiler room. Carl Ross did.

Ross was a Black custodian, a former coal miner, a husband and father who had worked at the YWCA for about three years. That morning, after discovering the bomb, he could have simply run. Instead, he moved through the building warning the occupants to get out. Contemporary newspaper reporting described 51 young women fleeing some without shoes as Ross tried to remove the explosive device from the building.

He almost made it.

Ross was only a few feet from a side exit when the bomb exploded.

The blast killed him. Windows shattered. Plaster was torn from walls and the stairwell was heavily damaged. But the people Ross had warned escaped without physical injury. Investigators at the time believed the explosion could have caused far greater destruction had the bomb detonated where it had been placed near the basement boiler.

Police investigated. The FBI examined fragments of the explosive. But investigators never determined who planted the bomb, and no one was ever charged with Carl Ross’s death. Decades later, the case remained unsolved.

For generations, Ross’s sacrifice received remarkably little public recognition outside his family and community.

Then, 65 years later, something changed.

In 2026, Carl Ross was selected for a Black History Month banner in Terre Haute. The attention helped revive public awareness of his story. The Terre Haute City Council subsequently voted to designate part of North Seventh Street in his honor, and in July 2026, Carl Ross Memorial Way was formally dedicated.

Think about that.

A Black custodian whose work might ordinarily have gone unnoticed walked into danger when everyone else needed to get out. Fifty-three people survived. He didn’t.

And 65 years later, the city where he died finally placed his name on the street.

Carl Ross didn’t need a uniform, title or fame to become a hero.

When the moment came, he simply chose other people’s lives alongside his own safety and paid the ultimate price.

His name was Carl Ross. Remember it.

But his young, unassuming status was matched only by his fierce moral clarity and legendary courage—when the Gestapo launched a sudden, nationwide dragnet to deport the country's Jewish population to concentration camps, he immediately risked his life to strike back.

Living in the small fishing village of Snekkersten, Preben joined a local underground resistance network known as the "Friends of the Sound". His terrifying operations took a legendary turn as he began sneaking Jewish families out of hiding spots and guiding them through the woods to the shoreline under the cover of dense night. When heavily armed German patrols flooded the streets with searchlights, the brave teenager flatly refused to abandon his posts, working with local fishermen to load families into small, vulnerable vessels.

Driven by the strict code that his schoolmates and neighbors were simply fellow Danes who needed protection, he repeatedly braved the treacherous four-mile crossing across the Øresund strait to neutral Sweden. The grueling, icy missions took an astonishing turn as his small network successfully ferried roughly 1,400 people to safety in less than a single month.

His remarkable operations finally forced him to flee into exile himself when the Gestapo discovered his identity later that winter. The global community discovered that his local efforts contributed to one of the most successful mass rescues of World War II, saving over 95% of Denmark's Jewish population.

Decades later, he was honored by the President of the United States for his immense moral courage, proving that to an indomitable soul, a wave of tyranny is never a reason to submit, but a debt of protection owed to your fellow man.
