Why Azerbaijan Should Offer Armenia Cheaper Gas

If Russia raises gas prices on Armenia as punishment, Azerbaijan should seriously consider offering Armenia cheaper gas.

For thirty years, Russia benefited from a divided South Caucasus. Conflict, closed borders, military dependence, and energy leverage helped Moscow keep the region weak and dependent. If Armenia is now punished for moving away from Russia, Azerbaijan has a rare chance to offer a different model: regional cooperation instead of pressure and isolation.

Cheaper Azerbaijani gas to Armenia would weaken Russia’s leverage, support peace, and make Azerbaijan the practical center of the region’s future economy. It would also send a powerful message to ordinary Armenians: cooperation with Azerbaijan brings stability, trade, and lower costs, while dependence on Russia brings threats and pressure.

Peace should not just be a treaty signed by politicians. Azerbaijan should invest in peace because peace can create trade, partnership, transport links, energy cooperation, and eventually a more united South Caucasus. That unity would be the strongest response to an aggressive Russia.

Azerbaijan Gas Just Got More Strategic 🇦🇿🔥

SOCAR, TotalEnergies, ADNOC and Turkey’s BOTAS have signed a gas sales agreement for the second phase of the Absheron field, with a final investment decision expected later this year.

Production is slated to begin in 2029 and exceed 4 billion cubic meters annually, with roughly half of the output expected to flow to Turkey.

The deal underscores Azerbaijan’s growing role in regional energy markets, strengthens Turkey’s long-term supply position, provides Europe with additional non-Russian gas volumes, and deepens ADNOC’s international gas footprint.

The broader signal is hard to miss: energy buyers are securing future gas supplies years before the first molecules reach the market.

And what are we supposed to do? What is the choice? And doesn’t a person living in Azerbaijan see the Armenian flag? Doesn’t it bother him? Didn’t we kill anyone there? Was the war all one-sided?

And why can they, but we can’t?
