Album of the day. Album of the day. Listening to No More Drama 25 years later transports me right back to that vibrant, yet fateful summer of 2001. The world was still reeling over Aaliyah's tragic death. Black pop was firing off on all cylinders, with the likes of Destiny's Child, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Usher, Nelly, OutKast, and others ruling the charts and airwaves. The days of running home to catch music videos premiere on BET's 106 & Park had hit a fever pitch. The emergence of Apple's "21st-century Walkman," the iPod, was still underway, cell phones were becoming commonplace, and social media was largely reduced to message boards and online dating sites.

Yet there was also still Mary J. Blige, the veteran hip-hop soul queen a decade into her career, redefining her place as one of R&B's most emotionally transparent voices in a changing landscape. Her first album of the new millenium, 2001's No More Drama, felt like both a transition and declaration: the defining moment Blige confronted the turmoil that defined so much of her public and private life and revealed that she reached the happiness she longed for.

A clear about-face from the retro-leaning grown-up soul of 1999's Mary, Drama was refreshingly diverse and commercial: a celebratory victory lap of radio-ready club bangers and soul-charged testimonies that brought forth boomy digitized beats, glossy synths, a sprawling cast of superstar collaborators, and a newly actualized Blige who sounded liberated and unguarded than ever. The album's mostly triumphant spirit is captured vividly on its first single, the Dr. Dre-produced clubber, "Family Affair," which famously introduced "hateration," "holleration," and 'dancery" to modern pop culture vocabulary. From there, the tension of joy and pain, newfound love and personal redemption runs through the album, as Blige passionately growls and croons on other highlights like the anthemic title track, the Al Green-sampled "PMS," "Dance for Me," "Rainy Dayz," and the Neptunes-produced "Steal Away." It all amounts to No More Drama's standing as a crucial gem in Mary J. Blige's mostly stellar catalog.
