You don't need to go to a gym or join a rugby team. Some brisk walking, yard work, or even dancing is just fine -- 30 minutes on most days of the week should do the trick.
Regular physical activity is a key way to keep yourself feeling young. It strengthens your muscles, boosts your energy, and improves your mood. https://t.co/MDcqyVIeDx

About 15% of older adults have mild cognitive impairment, which is the largest risk factor for the development of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. There is a known association between periodontitis—gum disease—and worsened cognitive function.
Oral Microbiome May Influence Cognitive Decline and Brain Health
The oral microbiome may play a critical role in cognitive function as we age, with specific bacteria influencing brain health.
Researchers found that beneficial bacteria like Neisseria correlate with improved memory and attention, while harmful bacteria such as Porphyromonas are linked to mild cognitive impairment.
These microbes can impact cognition by either entering the brain via the bloodstream or disrupting nitrate-reducing bacteria essential for brain function.
A nitrate-rich diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, promotes beneficial bacteria, supporting better cognitive outcomes.
The study also highlighted connections between specific bacteria and genetic risk factors like the APOE4 allele.
These findings suggest dietary and oral health interventions could potentially delay cognitive decline.

REM Sleep Delays May Indicate Early Alzheimer’s
A new study suggests that delayed rapid eye movement (REM) sleep may serve as an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease.
Participants with delayed REM sleep showed higher levels of amyloid and tau, two proteins linked to Alzheimer’s, as well as lower levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports memory and cognitive function.
REM sleep, crucial for memory consolidation, was delayed by an average of 193 minutes in at-risk individuals, compared to 98 minutes in healthy participants.
Disrupted REM sleep impairs the brain’s ability to process memories and may increase stress hormones, further damaging the hippocampus.
Researchers emphasize the importance of healthy sleep habits and note that certain medications and treatments could modify disease progression by improving REM sleep.
These findings highlight the potential role of sleep monitoring in Alzheimer’s prevention and early intervention.
