U.S. Marines landed on the Solomon Islands to seize a Japanese airfield, sparking a 6-month campaign against 36,000 Japanese troops. Over 60,000 Allies, mostly U.S., fought in jungles, skies, and seas, costing ~31,000 casualties. Henderson Field’s control defined the struggle, halting Japan’s advance. We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Papa Jake Larson, a true American hero and beloved D-Day veteran. At 102 years old, Jake was one of the last living links to the bravery, sacrifice, and determination of the Greatest Generation. Jake landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, and dedicated his life to honoring the memory of his fallen brothers. Through his infectious spirit, storytelling, and commitment to remembrance, he inspired generations to never forget the cost of freedom.
Rest easy, Papa Jake. Thank you for your courage, your kindness, and your unwavering patriotism. Your legacy will live on. 🇺🇸🫡
