Went to a card show today and this vendor had a card we wanted. His asking was 15k but recent comps are steadily 12 - his reasoning for his price was that we would not find another one at that card show. I offer above comps at 12.75 and he says lowest he would do is 13. Hell nah
At this exact same card show, it was my friends first show so I was trying to explain to her about how vendors do this and how you should always look up comps or try to haggle a price down a bit to not get overcharged. As I was explaining this to her, the vendor who had the card she wanted which was the Ditto from Crown Zenith: GG22 ($20) stickered at $25 said to her "that's frowned upon btw"
Also, this wasn't really about them not wanting to sell- if they want to hold or not sell that's their prerogative and noone should ever make sale or purchase they won't walk away feeling good about.
My main gripe is more about how a lot of vendors and resellers in the hobby right now are pricing things way above market with reasoning of scarcity, anticipating prices will go up or expecting buyers to haggle to the price they're actually ok with.
I see a lot of new people that are interested and attending shows for the first time not knowing how to look up comps or tell if anything is properly priced just trusting the vendor and ultimately getting the short end of the stick.
I check comps on multiple platforms, look at lowest listings and also take into account how often sales actually happen and how recent last few transactions were.
At the time of, there were sales on that same day at 11.2k and listings on ebay at 12 and slightly above with 2 more ongoing auctions as well.
It would be a completely different story if there were none available online or if there weren't many recent comps but the main reasoning being noone else at that show probably has one (he wasn't even sure) - that was my gripe with it :) I'm not saying vendors can't or shouldn't use that as reasoning or justification I just personally think it's not a great reasoning in this instance
Not really. I get the concept of supply and demand and why people list high anticipating people to negotiate down to the actual price they want but if you're actively trying to move something saying you won't find another one at the show to justify asking 30-40% above market it's pretty lame.
Especially when there were over a dozen sales online within the past week which shows that it's not THAT difficult to find.
To be clear, I'm not upset he didn't sell it I just think seeing how some vendors operate is funny to me
Yeah I think that's 100% fine and smart to hold onto something if you think the value will go up but if you're actively trying to flip something which this vendor was trying to do I think giving the reasoning of "you won't find any others at this show" is weak.
He asked for 15k and I was able to find two people - although not at the show but in the area that were willing to sell at 11k and 11.5k within less than an hour.
He wasn't the only one either. There was a vendor selling chinese boxes at near double market price because they were the only ones selling them at the show. I respect hustle the hustle, I truly do but I can't help but roll my eyes๐
Honestly, shouldn't even have offered that much in the first place - but I know for a fact he's kicking himself for not taking the offer bc afterwards I hit up some contacts and I have TWO people willing to sell at 11 ๐คฃ
